The 2017 CQ Ranking Manager Thread

Thanks for the update!

I'm continuing my stealthy, inconspicious rise in the rankings, this time by being 2nd on the week among the teams without Felline. As a belated reply to your post about riders left out, skidmark, I can mention that Felline was actually someone I really wanted to fit in and thought could be a cool, rare and successful pick I'd cheer a lot for, but in the end I didn't dare. The fact that he's not a proven commodity in the big classics (mostly because he never had the chance) was probably what kept me from picking him. Other than that, he ticks all the boxes for my perfect out-of-left-field CQ pick.

This week looks like it could continue my good trend of sneaky solid results.

Tour of Oman
ARU Fabio
DE PLUS Laurens
PONZI Simone

Aru should be up there, while De Plus, who seems to be in decent shape, should get some GC points by default in this uninspiring field. Ponzi seemingly crashed today, but any points from him would be a bonus anyway. I had wanted Vervaeke here, but at least he's doing Abu Dhabi.

Ruta del Sol
LANDA MEANA Mikel
CAPIOT Amaury

At least some GC points from Landa, but I'm not holding my breath for anything great. With some luck, Capiot will get me 3 points in a sprint stage.

Volta ao Algarve
BENOOT Tiesj
CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio
GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando
MAS NICOLAU Enric
MACHADO Tiago Jose Pinto
SPILAK Simon
DEGENKOLB John
ROSON GARCIA Jaime
VAN KEIRSBULCK Guillaume

Now Algarve could end up being a boring Martin/Martin/Kwiat/Lulu thing, or one or more of my big bunch of wildcards could brew up some shenanigans. At least it's 2.HC now (part of the reason for my Machado pick, along with TDU's 1.WT. That worked great, didn't it?).

In other, slightly worrying news, Vincenzo Albanese seems to have some knee problems that's delaying his start to the season, and unique pick Julien Simon has bronchitis which caused him to miss the recent Spanish one-dayers. Would likely have been up there in Murcia. Hopefully he's well again for Haut-Var.

and 13 points from the winner of the 'I don't have any idea who this is or what race they got points in' prize, Salah Eddine Mraouni (who is NOT a unique pick! 2 teams have him).

not unique because I am the other person who has him
I had a more successful week than others in so much that 5 riders scored points but unfortunately Benoot and the aforementioned Mraouni were my top scorers.

more hope this week with both Aru and Kudus among others in Oman and a few riders in both Andalucia and Algarve.

I am still surprised I am one of only eight who picked Felline. I really thought he would be more popular.

@ Squire - yes, I had much the same process with Felline! I saw his solidness at the Vuelta and in the few other races he was on form for last year and thought that could really be something to build on (I remember him being referred to back like 6-7 years ago as 'the Italian Valverde')... but again, I thought there were more likely points multipliers in that range.

In other news, my week is going okay. Aru is really my only big gun in Oman (wishing I had picked Kudus for a second year in a row instead of Phinney or Bauhaus, maybe), but Landa and Cink in 6th and 9th at Andalucia could be good for some handy points if it stays that way. (sidenote: Cink is looking like he might turn out pretty decently, unless this is his peak form - if he is going to be improving as he gets used to the peloton riding later in the year, he could be very good indeed) Kwiat is in good position in Algarve, he wasn't as strong as the other two on the climb the other day, but between that and that TT he should finish well as long as he doesn't blow up on the Malhao. It's been a slow start for my team this year, but the real WT stuff starts next week and that should get serious quick.

Well, that was an okay week, which is better than an invisible week, ie what I have been having up to this point. I usually pick a team that starts scoring a bit earlier (ie some Aussies) but it's been a slow start out of the top 100 thus far.

But this week, I got some success from popular riders (Aru 3rd overall and some stage points, Landa 6th overall, Degenkolb picked up a few); for the somewhat popular riders, Kwiatkowski's show in Algarve is definitely promising, and for my relatively rare riders, Cink's top 10 (with 50 CQ points) is definitely a good sign, and Grosu finishing second to Kristoff (and ahead of Modolo) in a sprint is for sure what I hope to see. Grosu is my rarest pick, and given Nippo's non-selection for the Giro, I'm hoping it makes showings in smaller races all the more important. If he's inconsistent in the sprints but can do something like this, picking up a few podiums in 1.HC races could go a long way.

Here's the week upcoming:

Tour de Provence

Eduardo Sepulveda
Simone Petilli

This is a pretty wide open race, I like the parcours, and I could see either of these guys snagging a decent result.

Langkawi - no one (and, holy geez, an HC race of this length offers so many points - congrats to those who have Bernal, or like Mareczko in the 3-year game)

Abu Dhabi Tour

Fabio Aru
Vincenzo Nibali
Julian Arredondo
Eduard Grosu
Rob Power
Robert Gesink
Phil Bauhaus
Elia Viviani
Simone Consonni

Quite a few riders here, quite a few points on offer... although the field is quite good too. Aru and Nibali are obvious top 5 threats; Gesink could top 10 if he's ok but I have no idea if he is and Kruijswijk has the leader's bib number anyway; Viviani should do well and I could see Bauhaus getting a result if he gets the right wheel (Griepel or Ewan or something) and hangs on for a placing... but that's about it. Arredondo seems to be building back some fitness and form, Power's working for Kreuziger presumably, Grosu is out of his league and Consonni doesn't really have a strength in this pan-flat-but-for-one-mountain parcours. Nibali, as will be the case often this season, is my one to keep an eye on here.

Het Volk

Stefan Kung
Yves Lampaert
Taylor Phinney
Edward Planckaert
Guillaume Van Keirsbulck
Lasse Norman Hansen

pfft, I dunno, big track powerhouses like Kung and Hansen can theoretically be good on cobbles stuff like this, but I haven't really seen it from either of them yet. Lampaert could definitely do well in the right situation, but look at QuickStep's lineup - aside from Vermote and Keisse, I could see any of their team contending for the overall win (plus, even though it hasn't been said, Boonen's gotta want at least one win in this race before he retires, right?). Phinney and GVK have shown promise on the cobbles but are a couple of years removed from that shine, and Planckaert is just starting his pro career. The range of possibilities is wide, but the most likely result is nothing of significance, maybe a top 10 with someone.

KBK I only have half those riders, and I don't think any of them will do particularly well in the fast finish of that type of race; the two French one-day races next weekend I have Ponzi, who I took for those kinds of races, and Sepulveda for the Saturday race, which he won two years ago so I have hope. All in all, my week is probably going to come down to Nibali and hoping for some of my guys to get in the right breaks in the classics. Excited to see classics season starting!

Not quite a "The Asian" week, but still with popular picks Kwiatkowski, Aru, Landa, Benoot and Degenkolb and less popular pick points from Panzerwagen & Campenaerts an absolutely approved week, which should hopefully give a big jump in the general classification.

The next week I've got lots of riders on the stage:

Tour Cycliste International La Provence
Noone - will look for Valentin Madouas for the 3-year game though

Le Tour de Langkawi
BERNAL, Egan Arley (THE favorite?)

Abu Dhabi Tour
ARU , Fabio (top3 GC candidate)
MINALI, Riccardo
BONIFAZIO, Niccolo
PELUCCHI, Matteo
VIVIANI, Elia (four candidates for sprint points)
ARREDONDO, Julian
TEUNS, Dylan

BOOM, Lars
VAN KEIRSBULCK, Guillaume
KÜNG, Stefan
GILBERT, Philippe
BENOOT, Tiesj
MARTIN, Tony

DEVOLDER, Stijn (Every single one of them has potential to do well in some of the spring one-day races, now it's time to see if I'm right)

Classic Sud Ardèche & Drôme Classic
Noone - story of my French calendar watch. Will have to look for Paul Ourselin in the 3-year game

Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne

KÜNG, Stefan
DEVOLDER, Stijn (Probably only Breschel has the chance to do something)

pretty good week for me with top 10s and stage points from Aru, Kudus, Rosa, Landa and Benoot plus some extra points from Degenkolb and Machado along with a few 'finished in the top 50' 5 point scores...

Finally collecting some points, like everyone else. Gaviria, Kwiat, Benoot, Aru, Landa and Degenkolb...hey even Lunke surprised with a few points in Andalucia. Upwards and onwards.

I got around 300 points, which would ordinarily be good in February, but I suspect many others have had similar hauls.

Soren Kragh Andersen and Lachlan Morton were pleasant surprises, but I was a bit disappointed in Uran. I hope Boeckmans, Senechal and Stuyven will be difference makers for me in the classics.

This week

Kwiatkowski 140, Aru 115, Landa 71, Benoot 66, Spilak 34 abd Degenkolb 16
With Kung, Ludvigsson and Ponzi Simone all 5
