Update #6: the asian scores big as the points start to flow

Well, with the upgraded status of Algarve and Andalucia (from 2.1 to 2.HC), plus still-HC Oman and the 2.1 Haut Var, this was a busy week in the CQ game. As no one had Ben Hermans (who won Oman), it would likely be the 3 teams who were boosted by having Roglic (or the 1 with Valverde) that would do well this week. Indeed, the top 2 teams had Roglic. But one team stood head and shoulders above the rest with a combination of points from a wide array of riders.

This Week's Top Scorers

Rank Team Points this week
1 the asian 718
2 GP Blanco 592
3 fauniera 578
4 Hugo87 569
5 Maaaaaaaarten 563

It was noted on the cyclingnews thread already by the week's winner, but the asian received points from all over the place this week - Roglic, Aru and Kwiatkowski were the biggest, but Landa, Gaviria, Spilak and Acevado all picked up over 30 as well. And that is how you win a week by well over 100 points. GP Blanco had a fine week as well, with Roglic, Aru, Landa and Benoot leading the way. fauniera rounds out the podium with more of a committee approach, with Kwiat the highest scorer and a mix of some of the aforementioned names.

This Week's High Movers

Rank Team up/down
1 the asian (+77)
2 GP Blanco (+44)
3 fauniera (+40)
4 DJ Sprtsch (+39)
4 Jpettersen (+39)

Same top 3, some decent jumps here and - HOLY CRAP 77 PLACES??? That's, uhhhh, pretty good. The early season can be fun.

Green Jersey Competition

Rank Team Total
1 GP Blanco 61
1 LightBing 61
3 Nicosix 59
3 archieboy 59
5 greenedge 46.2

And we have a tie up top! GP Blanco's second place on the week gets their team 35 points, which combined with last week's 26 points moves them up to tie the former sole leader LightBing. And the game has finally reached the point after 6 weeks where a weekly win won't get you in the top 5 automatically.

Top 10 Overall

Rank Up/down Team Points
1 (-) greenedge 1789
2 (-) LightBing 1720
3 (-) jeroenk 1664
4 (-) Eyeballs Out 1591
5 (-) lenissart 1518
6 (+14) Squire 1517
7 (+11) HelgeBlendet 1499
8 (-2) 18-Valve. (pithy) 1466
8 (+19) Pentacycle 1466
10 (-3) karaev 1452

Interestingly enough, with all the points and the jumping around, the top 5 are exactly the same as last week - all of them scored between 385 and 467 points on the week, so not a ton of movement. But below that, there are some large leaps into the top part of the table. Squire, HelgeBlendet and Pentacycle all do double-digit jumps into the top 10, whereas Jancouver, scrooll07 and sublimit fall out.

Yay 15th overall now :)

I'm gonna need some riders to do well this week to compensate for missing Aru though. Rogla is a rare and risky pick that is looking good so far. Meintjes is another important rare pick for me. Hopefully he can show something good on Jebel Hafeet.

Thanks for the update!

Made the top10 which means I've satisfied my expectations for the season. Had a great week thanks mostly to Aru, Kwiatkowski, Benoot, Cink and Landa.

Alentejo
Malori
Carapaz

not quite sure what to expect....

Langkawi
Maronese

Let's see if he's the sprinter I thought he could be..

Abu Dhabi
Aru
Teuns
Buchmann
Valls
Power
Arredondo
Gesink
Viviani

Woah... that one smells like disappointments... Everyone could score points, but they could also all fail to score or score lower than hoped for (Aru, Gesink, Viviani)

Omloop
Küng
Lampaert
Benoot
Boom
Vallee

First race of the season! Let's see some fireworks! Hope those guys are allowed to try something.

Very happy with my 4th place this week, last year I won a weekly update, but my overall classification was very disappointing.

Kudus already showing some good results and the expensive picks confirming themselves.

El Fares almost in profit and doing well on Provence this week, hoping big things from Edward Theuns this year.

Cattaneo scored 100 points for me today after winning the third stage of the Tour De La Provence and finishing second in the GC!
I can't bloody believe it! Will he finally have a breakthrough?
Let me echo the disbelief. I've been a big believer in the talent of Cattaneo for many years, until last year when I looked closer at his U23 results, and found that they weren't anywhere near as impressive as they look at first glance, which I elaborated on in a post somewhere.

Can't believe he's suddenly racking up the points, and in a type of race where he's never showed any promise before.

Must be a nice, satisfying feeling having Catteno for five years, being loyal and keeping your faith in him even though he disappoints year after year, and now he finally starts scoring points. I had him myself for a year or two but quickly lost faith.

It's mixed with the undeniable truth that I've been wrong every previous year (and also never in contention in this game). "Even a stopped clock is right twice a day"

I had him last year, along with Restrepo and Contreras. They were so lacklustre and disappointing until late in the season that I gave up on them for this year. My team from last year...which finished in the bottom 5 would be doing really well this year, with those three, Herrada, Ewan etc all racking up the points. I'm going to put a positive spin on it and claim to be avant garde.

Haha I can understand. But now there's 48 points more for you ;)

More points for Cattaneo! I'm jealous ;)

Hmm.. I thought this week would be good for me, but Abu Dhabi has been a bit disappointing for my team, no points from the French races, Omloop looked good for a while with Gougeard with the Sagan group and Theuns, Küng and Breschel in the chasing group but they all disappeared. Let's see what tomorrow brings.

I'm really happy that I picked Felline. He looks incredible even getting a lot of points in races where I didn't expect it at all. He already has 226 points.
Besides that I'll hopefully get a few points from Aru (who was a ver popular pick though) and Pozzovivo (who was a rather rare pick) from the Abu Dhabi gc. It's not exactly looking like a great week for me but I actually even expected worse.

I really wish I had picked Felline. I like him as an all-rounder (and the impressive manner in which he won the points jersey at the Vuelta), but was worried that he would keep amassing 10th-20th place finishes in all kinds of stages and races rather than pick up enough points. Great ride from him today.

On a more positive note for my team, my unique pick Gibbons is already in profit and Debesay (picked by only one other team) got the stage win in Langkawi today.

Other than Aru which lots have only my sprinters have done ok in Abu Dhabi, my Lotto duo really disappointing in Omloop and a a scattering of 5 pointers, only good news is Eddie Dunbar got some points today and looks well placed for top 10 in Volta ao Alentejo.

That climb in Langkawi was just too easy for Bernal, the result says enough.

Yes,but Miguel Angel Lopez won same stage last year and finished 3rd Overall .

Removing Genting Highlands has made the race a sprinter friendly one, but on the only day where the climbers had a chance, I certainly expected more.

Hmm.. not sure how to feel about this week
It's a shame KBK is only 1.HC, Dillier and Küng were top 20 but only scored a combined 21 points.
I had hoped Cimolai would score some points this weekend in France but seems the races were too tough

My results this week:
Aru 66
Ewan 53
Contador 27
Küng 16
Breschel 12
Theuns 10
Dillier 10
Consonni 7
Gougeard 5
Page 5

Contador is now at 180 points compared to 86 last year before Paris-Nice, a great start, but for the next period it'll be tough to match his results of last season, let alone improve on them. He was 2nd at Paris-Nice, 2nd at Catalunya and 1st at Pais Vasco, and this year there are less points available at Pais Vasco.
On the other hand, in the 2nd half of the season there is a lot of room for improvement so I am optimistic :)

as of Friday evening it was a dire week but respectable points this weekend from Aru, Benoot, Tratnik and Latour makes it look better.

next week I have Bernal finishing Langwaki and surprisingly 3 riders in Africa for the Amissa Bongo. and I have not checked who is riding next weekend in Italy...
