A relief to see that Pelucchi will have chances to sprint.
That was never in question. His team said that he would be one of their designated leaders.

What I read was only that he was signed to be "part of a strong group of sprinters", which sounded a lot like he was mostly intended as a helper, something that perhaps seemed ilogical for a unstabile but superfast rider like him, but still did not sound too good for his personal chances. Anyways I would always assume he was third choise in sprints from the start of the season so with Bennett and Sagan far away it had to be for him here no matter what. It will be interesting to see how often that will happen the rest of the season, since Bennett and Sagan will likely not continue to ride that many races together, and for instance how he much chances he will get riding the Giro with Bennett. But definetly he looks like he will be a good pick with this start, that should both boost his confidence and mean he will likely get more personal chances. And that should give him more chance to show he still has that topspeed where he could compete with Kittel, so that he might even be picked as captain ahead of Bennett sometimes and so that he could become a great pick.

Pelucchi was my last cut as I had him last year but failed, but while I took a second punt at some I had last year, I decided that Pelucchi wasn't going to do very well last year. I was wrong.

All this talk like he already scored 1000+ points while he is not even even and there are no guarantees that he will score any more points.

just saying we should not be counting any chicks before they're hatched.

Here's what's going on for my team this week:

San Juan

Filippo Ganna
Vincenzo Nibali
Eduardo Sepulveda
Elia Viviani

Well so far, Viviani is going as expected, Ganna finished top 25 in his first TT as a pro which is okay but as expected for early season. Nibali is doing fine, we'll see how selective the climb is tomorrow, but if it is he can podium this race without much fanfare. He's building up though, and stuff like Abu Dhabi (and then eventually Tirenno etc) will be more meaningful in terms of points in the buildup to the Giro. Sepulveda is disappointing so far, losing over a minute on a flat stage and underperforming relative to his skill in the TT. So, small potatoes this week, but not off to the best start.

Mallorca I have Kris Boeckmans it appears. Moving on...

Cadel Race

Tiago Machado
Phil Bauhaus

moving on...

Marseillaise

Kris Boeckmans
Edward Planckaert
Guillaume Van Keirsbulck

Well, any of these three guys are technically fast(ish), but I have no idea who will be sprinting for whom and who has form at this time of year. Onwards to February I guess!

He will probably do just the hilly races and skipped the flat race ... no reason to be there.

He's not on the startlist for any of the races.

It was based on this:

http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/kwiatkowski-i-have-a-fresh-mind-and-im-ready-to-rock/

Kwiatkowski's season is set to begin in Mallorca, where he has been since early January, followed by the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana and the Volta ao Algarve. The 26-year-old says he doesn't expect much in terms of results from these races other than building his form.

Strade Bianche, Tirreno-Adriatico and Milan-San Remo are all on the cards too, along with the Vuelta a Pais Vasco at the beginning of April. A trip to the cobbled Classics has long been a tradition for Kwiatkowski, in particular when he was riding for Quick-Step, but he will eschew them as he places his big focus on the Ardennes Classics.

Greipel got as much for winning yesterday as he did for winning on the Champs Elysees in 2015.

The famous Mallorca races surprise me every year with their ludacrious points.

Decent ride by Herklotz and Benoot in Mallorca and nice effort by Bernal in San Juan. It won't net me a ton of points at the end of the week but I'm liking what I'm seeing so far.

A good day for my team wasted by the news of the car accident that involved Vuillermoz who has sustained a benign fracture of the first lumbar vertebra...out for at least 1 month!

nice, Vervaeke almost has as many points as last year already.

Needed that too as have only only one entrant in all the various Aussie races. Quite a few in GP Marsellaise tomorrow though and hoping Hivert can repeat his success of a few years ago. Or Capiot to start a 1000 point season :)

Capiot was one of the reasons I didn't select Ewan or Bonifazio, which I'm sort of regretting. With Viviani, Albanese, Degs and Pelluchi that was enough fast men. Logically, they're probably better picks than the ones I've gone for, but I like to keep a balance to maintain interest through the season. Anyone else do something similar as there seemed to be an abundance of good potential printer choices this year.

Gaviria I didn't even consider as 800 points is pretty much my limit

The pain of watching two of my rejects from last year's game (Ewan and Restreppo) racking up the points was slightly mitigated by Dan McLay's win today. Gaviria winning tonight would be even sweeter.

Yeah, the early races always makes you doubt your choices when riders who were on the shortlist but didn't make you team or you had last year and ditched for not performing suddenly score big points.

I was feeling the same anguish with Porte being caught, at first I thought Froome was pulling him back just to demonstrate his strength so I got mad till I realised he was helping Rowe. Poor Haas looked very strong, just had no team around him. Shocking camera work to not show Meyer getting caught in the last 50M's too.

Not my greatest week, happy with Navardauskas scoring 72 in San Juan as I didn't expect any points from him, but I had hoped for more in Mallorca and Australia.

Update #3: LightBing revels in Lotto winnings

The first few weeks of the year always give something new - first races in the Aussie Nats, first big points in the TDU, opening of some big riders' seasons in Argentina, and now, the first races in Europe. The always points-rich set of races in Mallorca were a big factor this week, of course with a scattering of other points available from the newly WT Cadel race, San Juan stepping up to replace San Luis, and GP Marseillaise opening things up in France.

This Week's High Scorers

Rank Team Points this week
1 LightBing 482
2 Nicosix 440
3 Slapshot 402
4 minessa 400
5 Eyeballs Out 398

Not quite as big of a haul as greenedge last week, but LightBing has a convincing week, with rare pick Tim Wellens (2 teams) picking up 160 points from 2 wins in Mallorca, as well as 84 points from both Lotto teammate Louis Vervaeke (almost matching last season's total of 109) and Bora's Matteo Pelucchi (already well in front of last year's points). Restrepo adding to his early season Australian haul was also a boon. Nicosix, a big player in last year's game, gets second place on the strength of unique pick Nikias Arndt winning the Cadel race and rare pick Gerrans getting some points. Slapshot squeezes into third by having a unique pick in the other big Lotto scorer in Mallorca (Greipel), and the overall win in San Juan by rare pick (2 teams) Mollema. So far in the game, rare riders are paying off big time!

This Week's High Movers

Rank Team up/down
1 Slapshot (+63)
2 minessa (+42)
3 zlev11 (+36)
4 Nicosix (+35)
5 bort (+34)

Slapshot takes top spot here, and looking at the team, I think they may be featured on this list more than a few times before the season is up, with the above-mentioned big scoring rare picks... and Contador! Seems like some weeks will be boom or bust, and moving up 63 in a week is certainly on the 'boom' side of things. The other podium finishers, minessa and zlev11, each have a more diverse portfolio of scorers this week, with neither having a single rider that scored more than 90 points this week.

Green Jersey Competition

Rank Team Total
1 LightBing 61
2 greenedge 46.2
3 Nicosix 45
3 archieboy 45
5 Josedin 35
5 Blues in the bottle 35

LightBing got 8th place last week and 1st this week to get out to a relatively comfortable lead in the points competition; it's still very early going and only two teams have scored greater than the single weekly max.

Top 10 Overall

Rank Up/down Team Points
1 (-) greenedge 1087
2 (+10) LightBing 921
3 (+6) Jancouver 803
4 (+9) karaev 800
5 (+5) Guybrush 773
6 (+2) jeroenk 752
7 (-4) sublimit 748
8 (+6) ansimi 744
9 (+13) Eyeballs Out 742
10 (-4) Total Package 735

It's good to be at the top - greenedge is only one of two teams not to move up or down at all this week (the other is 11th place 18-valve), and although their team's lead is more slender this week, finishing just out of the points for the week (16th place) keeps a relatively healthy margin. The last two week's winners are 1-2, with Jancouver's steady team eking out karaev for the final podium spot.

spreadsheet at dropbox - special thanks to Squire for cleaning up some inconsistencies with the old sheet (making sure all the teams were sorted in scoring order, getting rid of some duplicate riders and spaces after names), and adding some new stuff like bolding returning teams to more easily see top newcomers etc.

Great update skidmark! thanks for your work.

it seem i'm performing pretty well despite having one of the least popular teams in competition
