Might this become the first stage race in a couple of weeks that Astana doesn't win? Or could G. Izagirre become their first repeat winner?

I find it quite funny how it's the inaugural UAE-Tour, yet Valverde is being referred to as the defending champion, having won Abu Dhabi last year. Shouldn't Viviani be considered a (sort of) defending champion too? Since he won Dubai last year.
Though I guess it's less a matter of Abu Dhabi and Dubai merging, and more a matter of Abu Dhabi gobbling up Dubai.
Valviani won Abubai Tour?!

Bennett vs. Ewan on Hatta Dam? :D

I think it's too easy for Kwai and Valverde.

I think Valverde finished 3rd couple of years ago, so I think he has a shot there...

He finished 2nd behind Degenkolb.

As little as 300-400 m of hard gradients is enough to favor him and eliminate most sprinters. But Hatta Dam is only 200 m.

I'd go with a small, light sprinter like Ewan for that type of finish.

EF betters Mitchelton...
And Mitchelton bettered UAE before, which bettered Gazprom.
Everything in order.

Dimension Data out of order.

Pretty much as predicted, no spectators and barren wide roads. Well at least the weather is nice.

And the towers are monumental.

Do they apply some technical measures when the wind brings sand on the asphalt?
The surface is surreal.

Dumoulin seems pretty ambitious and confident ahead of the race as well. Really wants to do well here

Team Jumbo Visma set the fastest time so far, it's strange that Tony Martin wasn't in the final four that crossed the line, unless he went all out before that.

I guess targeting the Giro puts him at the place on the curve where he could use a sharp breaking point.

Trek with 6 riders across the line... maybe they should have sacrificed someone.

Meanwhile, in Düsseldorf, Došen passes Serikbayev on penalties.

Considerable fading from Sunweb in the second half...
Congrats to Jumbo, nevertheless.
