Squire's 276 weekly points did enough for their team to finish in 2nd place overall, by 75 points.
Thanks skidmark for another fun season of this game (and to EITB for lending a hand)!

I'm of course happy that I managed my 3rd second place in the CQ game overall standings, especially after things were not looking so rosy due to the Ayuso dominance in the spring, but it's also starting to become a bit annoying. I'm becoming the CQ version of Jimmy White or Raymond Poulidor. :D What I really want to do is to win the game!

I've enjoyed following the battle to be best-of-the-rest behind shalgo with my rivals @EvansIsTheBest and @Earns1985 in the recent months, and it's a bit sad not to see at least one of them on the final podium with me.

Big congrats to shalgo once again for the dominant win!

Apologies for the messed up optimal team. I've used the R algorithm first developped by skibby in 2012. It has been reliable in the past, not sure what went wrong this time (especially since Armchair got it to run with no issues). I'll look into it this week-end.

Søjberg. Please write Søjberg. (Or 'Sojberg' if you can't write 'ø').
I was confused why Pedersen would have been a good pick, as he scored fewer point than last year. Both of them, in fact.
Yup thanks for correcting me. It was a long day but it's no excuse to butcher his name.

Thank you to @skidmark (and to his helpers, including @Shakes for making it easier to follow the progression) for organising the game, and congratulations to @shalgo on a dominant victory.

My Basque Street Boys failed to surpass their combined score from last year, but they did manage keep a higher percentage of their points than @RedheadDane's. And since 8 is my favourite number, 88.8% also sounds a lot better to me than 100% or above anyway ;)

Thank you to Skidmark for once agin running the game so well. Thanks to those who helped with updates and to Shakes for the website, its been a great addition. Huge congrats to Shalgo for a mightily impressive vicotry.

On a personal note, delighted to finish 10th, my best finish in 11 years, but slightly disappointed as was still on podium post Tour de France but fell away quickly after that. Here's to next year.

Started working on my team for next year, and I just noticed something:

Basically, the people who picked Asgreen in 2021: "YAY!"
The people who picked Asgreen in 2022: "***!"

Wonder if there have been other cases with riders so dramatically going from an amazing pick, to a terrible pick.

The most legenday pick of them all from the very first edition in 2011.

Higuita lost pretty much the same amount of points between the 2022 and 23 seasons and he kept being poop this year.

I don't know what your point it. Most riders that are a great pick one year will be a terrible pick the following year. That's the nature of the game. Doesn't matter that he lost so many points in 2022. No one in their right mind would have picked him in 2022 anyway.

Guess Pogacar is the exception.
The only year he didn't score more points than the previous year was 2022.
There are more examples as well with riders who are on their way up and who increase each year for a few years. That's why I said most and not all but the general rule is that if someone was a good pick then they won't be the following year.

Del Toro was a great pick this year and who knows what happens next year. He might be one of those riders who just keeps going and scores 1500-2000 points next year but with not much to go on who's gonna take that gamble when there are so many other riders to choose that are safer bets.

Well, if Asgreen had scored - say - 1130 points in 2022 he wouldn't have been a terrible pick. Sure, he wouldn't have gone into profit, but he'd have gotten a decent amount of points.

Surely, it's possible to have a rider not go into profit, and still be a good pick.
No, I wouldn't call anyone who just breaks even a good pick. I would probably call that a bad pick rather than a terrible pick though but at any rate the damage is done. Also someone like Asgreen at 1100 cost would likely be a unique or at least unpopular pick which would make it even worse. At least Hayter and Uijtebroecks were picked by almost half the team so many of us were in the same boat this year.

It's time to formalize what has been evident for some time - shalgo is the official champion of the 2024 CQ Manager Game! Their team coasts into the end of the season with a mere 98 points on the week, and while that does mean that they can't say they won by a nice round 1500 points, we can round up from the 1499 point difference to 2nd place, really. I'm not one to keep these types of stats, but I think the amount of weeks that they led this game has to be the most for a champion, and the margin is incredible. Is shalgo Slovenian? Did they switch CQ Game trainers this year? Whatever the case, their team is the (dominant and deserving) winner.

And that's it! That's the end of the CQ Manager Game for this year. I'll open up a new thread by mid-December as usual, and in the meantime, feel free to have post-mortems/off-season discussion here, make your lists for next year, and get annoyed that the guys you chose this year are winning on the track and cyclo-cross courses more than they did for you on the road. ;)

I was looking through my own team from the 2013 version of the CQmanager game.

What a terrible team I came up with that year. I have no idea what I was thinking. I must have just thrown something together at last minute or something. Out of 33 picks there were max like 7-8 picks that were actually reasonable picks at the time. I ended up scoring 10600 points that year which confirms how poor the team was.

Does anyone happen to have a version of the 2011 spreadsheet or something like that? I can't seem to find a complete list of what riders I had that year. Would be fun to check how many picks from that team that I would still make today.

Final spreadsheet for every year of the game
(Thanks to skidmark for helping me plug the holes in my archives when I had to switch computer a few years back)

Just to be clear; you mean riders you made then you would still have made for the 2011 team. Not riders you'd have made for the team for this year?

And now I wonder, what would be the best possible - of potentially not really good - team of riders eligible in 2011 still eligible this year?
