Two nominations for Valverde's non solo win in Roma Maxima. If that was a solo win then I nominate Froome's win in the Dauphine.

Proposed necessary and sufficient conditions for a victory to classify as 'solo':

1. A time difference to the second placed guy of at least one second.
2. The decisive attack that achieved separation from the pack of chasers occurred at least x km from the finish.

Froome's valiant effort fails both criteria and is hence not a solo win. Valverde's is.

If we include a further condition the set of solo victory shrinks markedly:

3. The winner must have have been alone from the moment the decisive attack was made.

Then Valverde's win isn't a solo finish, neither is Kwiatkowski's Strade Bianche.

Very few of these can come close to Contador in Tirreno.

I give Kwiatkowski credit where its due, but attacking 5k out on the final hill, when there is a descent the rest of the way, even in worlds <<<<<<<<<<<<< Attacking 30 k out.

He was marked immediately, cracked all his opponents - solo, caught the break, pulled them along and then cracked them too.

It was better than Fuente de and by extention better than pretty much anything this millenium.

+100 km solo attack of Svein Tuft at Canada National Championships need an honorable mention

Svein is an awesome guy. I met him a time or two at the Tour of Missouri. Very class dude. Did you see the US Cyling championship win he had in the snow and ice in around 2007-8ish....incredible?

Yes I agree. I haven't seen the Us open cycling championship of 2007 but with all the troubles and crashes he had during this year Giro he still managed to make it to the end.Tuft (second from bottom) and Hepburn (third from bottom) were the only two riders from OGE to finish the Giro and they gain all my respect.

Quintana Val Martello.
Tony Martin Mulhouse.

Honorable mention to Booms Cobblesstone ride and Aru's and Majka's stage wins (not sure if they can count as a solos, definitely one of Majka's).

Nibali Hautacam, really?

And even though Boom's Arenberg ride was really good, he was only alone for the last 5 k or so. Not really an incredible solo win.

That's true, Booms should probably go in honorable mentions, edited.

And Nibs Hautacam ride was the embodiment of awesomeness! :D In my mind at least. followed Horners attack at 10K to go then went solo himself about .5K later and stormed his way to the stage win. Perfect mountain and perfect way to cap off a great Tour for himself. :)
