You don't need TUEs for cortisone cream.

In competition you do. Out of competition you need it if it does not clear your system prior to a race. For injections that is about 9 days....cream, can't image that is much of an advantage.

I'm taking my information directly from the UCI anti-doping pages, where it says:

1. IF YOU NEED TO USE GLUCOCORTICOSTEROIDS

The type of documentation you must submit for the use of Glucocorticosteroids depends on the “route of administration” (how you administer or take the medication)

1a. Authorized Routes of Administration:

You do not need to submit any TUE if you take Glucocorticosteroids by the following routes:

Dermatological – on the skin;
Auricular - in or on the ear;
Buccal – inside the mouth (without swallowing);
Gingival - on the gums ;
Nasal - inside the nose, either by topical application or nasal spray;
Ophthalmic – on or in the eye;
Perianal – on or around the anus.
Inhalation – through the mouth via an inhaler or “puffer”;
Intradermal injection – into the skin ;
Epidural injection – into the spine ;
Intra-articular injection – into a joint capsule;
Periarticular injection – around a joint;
Peritendinous injection – around a tendon.

Nevertheless, we remind you of article 13.1.065 of UCI regulations which states that “In case of a local injection of glucocorticosteroids, which is subject also to the Anti-Doping Rules and the Prohibited List, the rider must rest and is prevented from competing for 8 days.”

http://www.uci.ch/templates/UCI/UCI2/layout.asp?MenuId=MTU2ODY&LangId=1

So sprays and creams do not need TUEs, and injections do not require TUEs but the rider is prevented from competing for 8 days.

You are right. I wonder how much a ride would have to spread on to get a performance advantage.

I'm not sure of the mechanism. How exactly does it provide a performance advantage when injected? (I will jfgi later but if it's a simple explanation...)

At a guess if it's having sufficient effect for performance advantage, it would be a similar amount getting into your body as a local injection would provide, and hence require sitting out of competition anyway?

For years the idea was that it made it so you did not feel pain. Nowadays it seems that riders think it can do lots of things. Personally I think it is really bad news. It is crazy to hear of its resurgence

Based on that list, I'm afraid to ask.

What other routes might be available? :eek:

“The form is better this year than it was last year,” Horner told reporters last week at the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah. “I just need the health to clear up a little bit. Hopefully, this next week I’ll take it easy, let the lungs clear up and after that I’ll be 100 percent and ready to go on to win something at the Tour of Spain.”

“I’ll do what I did last year. I’ll go back to my home in San Diego. The weather should be gorgeous. Go there, finish up the training, then head over to Spain and hopefully, 100 percent healthy,”

“Lot of guys, good competition going to Spain, so it’s gonna be a nice race, and hopefully we put on a good show for the fans,” Horner said at Utah. “You want the best field. Everyone wants to win against the best. It doesn’t pay to win races that no one is at.
