It does make me feel that some of BW's less pleasant behaviour toward CF, which was much mocked at the time ("cry baby", etc.) - in hindsight, was basically more or less completely justified - Froome WAS unreliable, untrustworthy and liable to go off message. His refusal to let Froome chase Valverde in the final 2012 mountain stage comes across now, in retrospect, as entirely understandable.
It also puts his 'trolling' of froome prior to the 2013 giro in some sort of context.
It's easy to see Froome as the alpha cyclist now, in hindsight - but when you think back - 3rd at Vuelta just back from broken collarbone, Strong 2011 prior to crash at Tour, back to back Dauphine, complete domination of early 2012, mostly without any Froome help..when you think about it, it's preposterous to think sky would do anything but put all the chips on Wiggins - he'd earned that. Did froome think they should throw that all up in the air because he finally found form (after a mediocre 2012, btw) on Les Belles Filles - even though he was already a minute odd down because of a crash.
Hell, there's a real argument that Wiggins , with a TDF in the bank, a long flat TT final stage, a fine Roubaix this year, and an impressive California win and mountain showing on his books already this year - and froome's form very up and down - , has a much better argument to be a 'protected Plan B' at this years tour than Froome ever did in 2012, 2011 Vuelta result notwithstanding. D'ya think Froome and cound would wear that now? Well, we already know the answer, don't we.
