Teams & Riders The Great Big Cycling Transfers, Extensions, and Rumours Thread

Sergio Samitier signs with Cofidis for three years.

He is a guy I've been waiting for the breakthrough of ever since he signed with Movistar as the 'next big thing' in Spanish cycling. Never really happened, and was probably never going to either. He came through during a bit of a dark ages in Spanish talent development it seems, as nobody else from that generation really made it big either, like Barcelo or Jaime Castrillo for example.
I think it's more about that that was when the top talents started looking beyond the traditional teams in Spain and also the cadet and junior teams were hit by the loss of so many pro teams post-financial crisis and post-Puerto, meaning fewer options for riders and more people staying in amateurs longer roadblocking the young guys or them getting disillusioned and quitting.

Lizarte starts to struggle to produce strong talent for Movistar at that point, having been their long-time feeder, but you have people like Enric Mas, Cristián Rodríguez and Iván García Cortina come from that same generation, they're both the same age as Samitier, but leaving Spain as espoirs.

From the 1995ers you also have Álex Aranburu who has done well with his niche along the lines of a Luísle or something, but I suspect Óscar Rodríguez is another to go in the same generation of never-quite-made-its you mention.

Barcelò in fairness to him had health problems that derailed him as well as the elder Castrillo, but 1996 also has Xuban Errazkin, a top prospect who went to Portugal and looked promising (14th in the Volta at 21!) only to then have tested positive and get yeeted from Avenir.

to Movistar

Now confirmed

Don't be surprised if all or a combination of Behrens, Brennan, Hagenes and Nordhagen come down from altitude at the end of February and immediately start mobbing the front at the sharp end of opening weekend.

Their young classics squad is absolutely incredible.
Big fail by Trek not to keep such a strong guy from their developmental team.

And Bora, missing out on another German talent.

During Sunday's coverage on German ES, Aldag was asked whether Behrens was an option for them as well. He said, they were just developing their U23 team, and that it would have more of a focus on potential GC riders. So it sounded like they didn't even consider him to step up to WT with them already.

Nordhagen is not a classics rider though. But yeah, they do have a few potential new Van Aerts lined up.

That comment is so stupid!
They invested heaviliy in classic riders this transfer periode (Jumbo twins, Tratnik, Pithie, Lazkano). They simply messed this up or they were way too late.

If the rumours are true, it will be the same for their MTB teams.......

Dascalu is obvs out. Anton Cooper probably too. Jolanda Neff said to be leaving. they'll probably have Riley Amos and Bjorn Riley step up from the U23 to the elite mtb team.
what I've heard is Trek is lowering the budget.
LIDL will keep funding the team, they already have 30 riders under contract for 2025 (men team)

Yeah, that was mentioned elsewhere. I'm not sure Munro is going to make it as a top rider, but she's US, so may get kept on.
And a rumour on VitalMTB reckons Harnden might be off the Enduro team - they're only interested in DH.
