Obviously Nibali was doping in last year's Giro and got a boost from the blood bags in the second rest day. With that said, Kruijswijk fell, Chaves cracked, and Nibali received good assistance from teammates. Even Nibali's attacks looked like the standard doped-up rider variety, rather than Cancellara riding a motorbike over the cobbles.
As for Landa, it looks like he's not a good responder. Different people respond to different treatments in different ways, and it seems like his new cocktail just isn't getting it done for him. Or, another possibility is that his body benefited for a short period of time but then started rejecting it. You see similar cycles in tennis and golf.
