The Mad Mads Pedersen Thread

Figured I'd make a thread for this guy.

So, Mads Pedersen. Just won a stage in the Tour of Norway, earlier this year he won the U23 Gent-Wevelgem, he was also eight in GC and won the youth classification in de Panne.

He's also got plenty of results as a junior, among them a win in the 2013 Paris-Roubaix.

I would want to wait until they're at least 25 and actually achieved something before believing in Danish youngsters.

But Pedersen does indeed seem like an exceptional talent. A proper all-rounder, too.

Huge talent. Wurtz, Pedersen and Kragh Andersen are better than anything we have had the last 10 years and certainly much better than Lander and Lund.

Hopefully the fact that he's making a gradual step-up (from conti, to pro-conti, to - supposedly at some point - WT) will work to his advantage. What seems to have been the issue for several riders in the past (Guldhammer, Lander, Norman) has been the sudden jump from conti to WT.
Of course it probably doesn't make matters worse that he actually became a pro with the team, rather than having to change teams.

With the GC win of Denmark-Tour today he has already 6 pro wins, and he is still not 22 years old. What kind of rider will he be in the future? Probably classics hunter? Or only TT and domestic like Tony Martin?

He'll certainly be a classics rider. Good on both Hills & Cobbles.

He is a good tt'er but not a specialist, so I don't reckon him going that way.

He is strong in hilly terrain, has shown promise on the cobbles, has a fast finish and a good motor so the classics seem the obvious choice. His tt will make him a threat in some of the softer stage races too, I reckon.

He had probably the best season ever by a Danish rider in his last year as a junior so he has always been regarded as a major talent here. Glad to see his is improving steadily, his shape since august has been amazing.

5th in Dwars door Vlaanderen well. It is short distance. May be due to bad rain.
2th in Tour of Flanders.. well, it won't be random or lucky.

Same age as Cortina btw. Extremely impressive performance. He was basically stronger than Sagan on the part after the Paterberg.

I knew he was a good rider and had a future in these races, but I never even closely expected him to be this strong, this early and this race. Wow.

A bit like Benoot when he was 5th in his first RVV. Still be careful though for confirmation. It could be good every year or it could take a few years.

Because they will be huge!!

As a clinician I know you cant say this;
But I think he went more deep in will-power than anyone else on that last stretch.

Well done.

He will need all his talents and will-power onwards as he will be given no quarter from now on.

And, look! Didn't have to wait til he was 25 until he achieved something.

Although Benoot's Flanders debut was really really impressive, I think Pedersen's debut today was just outstanding, in a different league. He barely missed the boat when Terpstra went on Kwaremont, despite being in the break for a long time. He did not lack very much to be able to follow Terpstra there - and what could have happened in that case? We are talking about a rider, who (granted, he was allowed leeway to go in the break, but so was Terpstra) in his first ever Flanders was extremely close to winning it. It's almost unheard of in modern cycling.

No, Pedersen was in a early attack and even rode alone for quite some time and then was desperately close to hang on to Terpstra for, basically, a 50/50 for a win in a monument. He was gifted absolute nothing today, quite the opposite.

Hard to tell. This was not dedicated Sagan. I think he opted he had better chance to catch Terpstra in the strong group than alone.
But he was definitely stronger generally, so many km in break and still able to keep the gap. Great ride today.

Well, he has been regarded as perhaps the biggest talent of his generation in Denmark since he was a junior so he is not unfamiliar with high expectations. Of course it is impossible to tell if he will become a star someday, but if there is one rider amongst the current crop of young, talented Danes who has the mentality to become a legit superstar, it’s him.

I’m not so sure of that. I know he won the race as a junior but he has the power and explosiveness which is petfectly suited to the flemish hills.

I think some of us actually selected him in some CQ games as early as 2014!
