Perhaps not spectacular per se, but EBH had some serious hunger knocks in P-R and RVV this year. Particularly in RVV when he had made the 2nd group (despite bad luck with fall) and looked set to finish in the top 5 as he was a much better sprinter than most people in the small group. In the end, he didn't only finish last from the group in the sprint - he managed to be caught by the peloton within the final meters. For such a strong rouleour/sprinter to not even being able to hold on to a small group on the flat shows just how bad hunger knocks can be.
If it's hard to avoid hunger knocks for normal people, I can't imagine how hard it must be for someone like EBH who can't eat gels/bars/energy drinks. Eating only sandwiches and drinking water after 250 km of torture on the cobbles...auch!
