VDP's results in Vlaanderen for the last few years:

2022: 1st

The moto pacing prior to the Paterberg was the only reason why he was still within reach.

No, at the moment he isn't even scheduled for Amstel Gold Race. If I was him I would go on holiday after Roubaix and focus on TDF and WC

Great ride by this man. As much as I'm WVA fanboi, I have massive respect for him after that monster ride. I could not fault him anywhere. He dropped WVA when he needed to, and fought to the very end against a man who was on another planet.

Except there isn't, since he still has MTB ambitions in Paris '24 and Nove Mesto in early May is just about the only time in the year where he is free from other duties.

Not sure what country you're from, but in my country (a very wealthy one that buys a lot of bikes - probably more than all the European countries combined), 99% of the population doesn't give a damn about any type of pro cycling and 99.99% don't know what the hell "palmares" means. So if MVDP likes racing MTB's (90 minutes of balls to the walls fun requiring much more all-around cycling skills and athleticism than road cycling), more power to him. And great for us folks that love watching him race MTB's!

Probably not. According to info i found online, in 2021 around 20 million bikes were sold in the US, and over 22 million in the EU (so not even all of Europe). But i'll admit, it's closer than i thought it'd be. Not sure how that relates to Van der Poel or his palmares. That's like linking car sales to Hamilton or Verstappen's Formula 1 palmares.

I'm just saying that MVDP is selling a lot of Canyon bikes in the US - Aeroad, Lux, Inflite - good enough for MVDP = good enough for us hacks. Not to mention you get a lot of bike for your buck w/Canyon. Not sure your car argument makes sense. It's not like you can buy or drive an actual F1 car. That said, I'd love to get my hands on one of these

You can't buy or drive an actual F1 car. But not many people can (or do) buy the 8.000+ dollar race bikes that WT teams ride either. If people spend thousands on a bike, chances are it 'll be a comfy granny E-bike. Canyon is just a sponsor for MvdP, why should that be a deciding factor when it comes to which career trajectory he should follow? I'm not even sure why you'd bring the comparison with the US into this. That's like saying an NFL player shouldn't really bother with his NFL career, because in Europe we have no idea who he is or what NFL even stands for. It seems a rather strange argument. Everybody should do whatever makes them happy, but as one of the more gifted pro cyclists, it makes sense for him to prioritize the biggest cycling categories and races.

This is because half of the bikes sold in the USA are disposable items from Wal-Mart that are designed to fail and can't really be serviced. By way of comparison, the last time I was in Amsterdam half the bikes I saw being ridden around were at least 25 years old.
