As a big Mathieu fan I immediatly said he shouldn't have spat but it was in the heat of the moment after several occasions. In his defense, I would've Zidane'd these "supporters" out of the country.

Jokes aside. I was just thinking, what if you're at work and some drunk people booing you and throwing beer/urine at you every 6-7min for 55min. I think no one could keep his calm.

It happens occasionally (to much). Search these people and ban them for live. The media making this like a crime as usual, hope they can figure something out to prevent it in the future.

You would call the cops.

Unless your hands were glued to handlebars. Then you would reasonably expect your employer (race organizer) to call the cops for you.

If you take matters into your own hands, and throw bodily fluids back in kind, you get arrested for assault too

Van der Poel's reaction can't be condoned, but his anger in the heath of the moment can be understood. If someone did this in the Tour, they would probably send him home.

When there are spectators who misbehave, by booing, yelling offenses or throwing fluids, they should be removed. The organizers, security guards or the police should intervene by sending them away or letting them keep distance, to avoid things getting out of hand.

The majority of spectators is very respectful and supportive towards the riders, but a small minority of troublemakers can be enough to ruin the atmosphere.

I’m surprised about the issues raised about booing (as a separate behavior than throwing things). Are there some cultural differences (between countries or continents) about the acceptability of booing and verbal abuse of opponents? These are completely normative, and for some fans, the looked-forward-to aspect of attending NFL, NBA, NHL games—and their equivalents in college and even high school.

Though I’ve never attended one I’ve certainly read plenty about fan verbal abuse of players at European futbol matches. So is it that pro cycling is closer to tennis or golf in expectations of fan behavior?

I think it's mostly VdP fans making excuses.

As has been repeated in this thread, MVDP is singled out for booing and heckling at every single Belgian cross for years. If that is all that had occurred at Hulst, there would have been no issue. Obviously a line was crossed with this one group, either in the content of the verbal abuse, or tossing cups of various fluids as reported, or possibly both. Mathieu snapped and reacted thoughtlessly and stupidly, but if it was your bog standard jeering there would have been no incident, if only because the same scenario has been repeated hundreds of times prior to yesterday. I don't consider this to be excuse-making, others may. Fan behavior clearly is an issue at some of these races, whatever you think of the spitting.

Whatever the provocation, this is the 2nd incident where he has gone over the top. It appears to be a character flaw and i doubt he will change since he has got off lightly both times. Maybe he should get some earbuds next time to block out the insults. Its not as if these people will throw insults when he is not present. His team needs to take action if they want to avoid further more serious incidents

By the way, booing an athlete at a race isn't the same as a random person coming off the street to heckle you in your office.

But if a few thousand people want to crowd into my office for $10 each and a few tell me my code is *** and I should go back to programming a "Hello World!" application, I guess I brought it on myself. wink.

An HLN report said their editors had confirmed it, and he said as much himself in an interview with a Dutch outlet. Not that it was urine necessarily but that cups were being thrown at him. As nearly everyone has commented, this doesn't excuse anything but you can't speculate on what anyone else would do in his shoes because no one else is subjected to this sort of thing as often as him.

Marty & Jeremy called it out on commentary during the race, so Im guessing its a common enough thing when you see liquid being thrown, they arent chucking beer away.

as to why VdP doesnt mention it immediately post race, dont know, why has no one asked him that either ? also dont know, but he's not the most eloquent of riders even before spending the best part of an hour racing like that

It should be so frequent that even Iserbyt stated last october in an interview about being booed at during the races that at least he wasn't being thrown with beer or even urine.
