Teams & Riders The "MVP" Mathieu Van der Poel Road Discussion Thread

This guy has history, talent, tact and grace. He rides positive almost always, always working, attacking alone and with anyone who can contribute. His humility is extraordinary, he is quick to give compliments, always appears to have things in perspective. Does it hurt that his immediate reactions are typically to thank his family and teammates, reluctant to take high praise. Did I mention he is strong, good looking and an intelligent racer..a multiple discipline champion. And funny that his easy going demeanor comes off the same in multiple languages.. In different continents.. If you were to design the perfect bike racer in a laboratory.. He is it!! Congratulations!!
Except in Australian hotels, evidently. Just sayin. I like him though.

I know you’re being tongue-in-cheek here, but let’s be real, he’s human, not perfect. I’ve been in a similar situation and was just as pissed, with the massive difference being that I didn’t have to get up early the next morning for one of the biggest races of the year, where I was not only a top favorite but also had been building toward it all season. The guy needed every bit of rest he could get. Anyone judging him over that incident is either being disingenuous or a hypocrite.

I just wanted to point out that none are angels. Put them under enough pressure and they will go from Dr. Jekel to Mr. Hyde. Of course, the little brat doubtless deserved it.

I'm having a fantastic day, you should try it, instead of doing all this extra stuff in regards to a consummate champion. Get a grip my guy, and enjoy Mathieu now that he's still racing. It'll be a sad day for true cycling enthusiasts when he retires.
Awesome! Glad things are going great for you. I was just getting ready to head out for a ride, and a friend texted and said he wanted to do a ride today after lunch. Gonna have a great day here in an hour or so

Plus! I was the winner in guessing the time on the Cipressa today, so you ain't gonna break my stride today :tearsofjoy: .

No one’s ever claimed he’s perfect, obviously. But let’s not act like that one incident defines him. Mathieu has been under immense pressure his entire career, especially during the peak of his rivalry with Wout. Half the time it was Mathieu vs an entire nation including fans, media, and commentators, all constantly poking, provoking, and looking for cracks. He’s had beer and even piss thrown at him by deranged fans blinded by hate and envy.

And through all of that, he’s handled himself with more grace than most ever would. If you’re being fair in your assessment, you’d have to admit that compared to a lot of champions, both current and past, he’s actually a role model when it comes to composure and character.

We agree on something. I still don't like him.

Good. Hopefully you have more sensible friends. Enjoy your ride!

Right, nobody is, which is why I find it ironic when someone as gentlemanly and good-spirited as Mathieu, can, under the right adverse circumstances, lose control. Getting piss thrown on you only demonstrates how some fans need mental help.

Light-work. Good thing you weren't on these boards in my heyday. A spit-shield would have been the least of your concerns. Lol.
Not discounting that, but you aren't familiar with my prior work on this forum. I and a couple others, were the ones calling BS on Armstrong years before the confession. I took more heat than this by quite a margin...and dished out just as much.

True story: On this very forum, I had a guy threaten to find out who I was, come to my house and tie me up while he r*ped my wife, so she could see what a real man was like. <of course he was banned>That one actually did frighten me a bit. Some people took that Armstrong stuff pretty seriously.
