So I was looking for sourcing on that and it turns out that Egan Bernal's girlfriend has a personal youtube channel running for him and it's really, well, sweet. And also very transparent. I noticed stopped posting his heart rate data on Strava after Gibraltar but the power numbers are still there -for the meantime, I'm reckon Sky will put an end to that at some point. They even got a team Sky coach to elaborate on his training regime live on camera. That has to be a first. On the flip side, baby-face does get listed among the guys he trains with.

Whatever else Egan, his family and even his coach, come off as good humble, genuinely nice people. I hope they keep this up. It seems very un-Sky like, for sure, but it might just go to show that Sky is either relaxing the reigns a bit or they're really keen on keeping him around.

But yeah, I do think he's gearing up for the Tour. There's a reason they sent a coach down to Colombia, and I'm guessing it wasn't just to say hi.

I was in Italy a few weeks ago and drove past a beat up old transit van mini bus type thing. On one side was a pretty dodgy looking screen print type photo of Egan, with the banner "Egan Bernal Fan Club". Took me by surprise considering he wasn't at the Giro, hope i get to see the van at the Tour...it was really cool and totally at odds with the slick Sky image.

Wish i'd got a photo but was driving at the time
Yes, they already founded a local fan club in the piemont region where he stayed when he was riding for Androni, all their Latin American riders live there in a hotel, Nivolet is their favourite training climbs and all the local U23 riders want to train with them.
Fun story, the Hotel owns a few Chickens and Cows (to provide fresh milk and eggs for the guests) and when he's not on the road Ivan Ramiro Sosa gets up early to feed them and take care of them, he says that it reminds him of his home and helps him not to get homesick.

Ahh yes of course; i was in Piedmont heading to Cervinia, i should have got the Androni link...

The more i see and hear of this kid the more i like...i just hope it stays this way and he doesn't get tarnished with all of the negativity surrounding his new team...

au contraire, he will bring a new breathe into Team Sky. he´s greatly needed

I agree and really hope so.....but you know as well as i do that there are some folks who will refuse to acknowledge anything positive in anything Sky do

I don't think so and don't care about it, at all.

Bernal / Froome in the 2018 Tour might be like Contador / Armstrong in the 2009 Tour. It might be a year or two too early for Egan though. We will see.

Bernal looks like the real deal, but I think it's a year too early for him. Not yet a Froome-slayer.

It will be nothing like that. Bernal hasn't won a GT yet and frankly I don't get a Lance-vibe from Froome. Really like Bernal . . . hopefully Sky doesn't squander his potential.

He's in? Procyclingstats has this as the SKY lineup..

FROOME Christopher
.. MOSCON Gianni
.. THOMAS Geraint
.. KWIATKOWSKI Michal
.. POELS Wout
.. VAN BAARLE Dylan
.. BERNAL Egan Arley
.. CASTROVIEJO Jonathan

That's a provisional startlist. In reality, Luke Rowe is training with Kwiatkowski, Froome, Poels and Thomas, making it harder to see him get dropped for TDF.

I’m still hoping that they don’t take him. Sky is strong enough as it is and honestly it would be annoying as hell seeing him slave for Froome of all people.

its about him learning from the master, if you can't see that then its a shame...its one big learning curve

Exactly, all this 'slave' nonsense...the kid is about to ride the biggest bike race in the world with the undisputed best GT team of recent times, a team which includes one of the best GC riders of this or any generations. A rider who one way or another within the next couple of years will be looking to pass the baton on to a young team mate.

For a future GT contender, opportunities to learn on the job really don't get much better. Its the stuff dreams are made of.

Referring to this opportunity as 'slavery' is an insult to the term.

What is the rush? With reduced rosters the pressure on Bernal will be magnified as will the attention from the media. He has ample time to learn without being thrown into the Tour as his first experience at a grand tour. I think this was the fear of quite a few of us and it's become a reality. I'm a firm believer that a step by step process of introducing young up and coming prospects to grand tours by having them ride the Vuelta or Giro as their first grand tour and then the Tour depending on how they do in Spain/Italy.

All those people saying he shouldn't be at the Tour. If for whatever reason, Froome or Thomas end up out and Bernal is still within touching distance and then goes on to finish on the podium, would you still think it was a bad idea to take him? The lad has got to learn sometime so why not now, even if he is just gonna end up domming for Froome and G. He may have done well in a few week long races, so maybe now is a good time to start the 3 week ones.

Ok, that's a fair view and one I initially shared, but I don't necessarily think he's being 'rushed, and even if I did, I along with you are not best placed to judge this.

Sky don't need Bernal to ride the Tour, they have any number of alternatives in the squad who could fill a spot and do an equal or better job to Bernal at this point in his career.

At best Froome has 1, maybe 2 years at most left as the dominant force he is. Sky need a replacement.

Bernal is 1, maybe 2 years away from being the future star of GC if he's as good as we think he is.

That's not coincidence. Bernal has been recruited to replace Froome in an orderly planned fashion, not to serve him.

So Sky will have thought long and hard how best to develop him over the next 2 years. Including him in the Tour is not a needs based decision, it's because they believe it's the right time for him already.

Whichever side of the Sky debate you support, they know what they're doing when it comes to preparing GC riders. They're closer to Egan than any of us, so if they say now is the time for him to ride the Tour, then who are we to say they're wrong.

I for one can't wait to see how he goes.

So excited to see Egan at the TdF.
Lets go EB!

We are not best placed to make many of the judgements, opinions and analyzing that we do here on a daily basis, but we do anyway. Why would this specific incident be any different?

That's approximately at same level with Contador's 2016 best performances. For example uphill prologue in Criterium du Dauphine.
