Some will turn it into a discrimination issue, it always happens these days whether its warranted or not. She should never have played. If she took a break for a while that would have been the end of it. Its not as if is hasn't happened before.

That is stupid because this is a case of rules are rules, esp if you refuse to tell anyone and then make comments on social media. This isn't a discrimination issue of any type.

Plus if she really doesn't like doing interviews she can still show up do what Marshawn Lynch and a few others have done and cut it short. Athletes have been walking out of press conferences since at least the 70's if they are asked questions they aren't going to answer and that question is repeated. But they showed up and answered a couple of questions before that happened. Some have been in pretty bad shape when doing so as well.

I completely agree that she should not have gone to the tournament in the first place. She should have been getting professional help instead of playing.

That's what I'm saying, some people will make it so. What makes sense these days ?

the entitlement of athletes keeps growing with amount of money they make and social media presence, nobody dares to say to her that paycheck she wants is being paid by a company that wants to splash their logo over the wall behind her

its no different than kyrie irving, who wants to be anything else but play basketball...oh btw he is still expecting his contract to be paid of course, that obligation is sacred

its really a miracle how athletes and fans managed to make me side with owners and corporations in sport more and more for past few years, that wasnt the case in 90s or pre-social media age, since then its getting more and more insufferable

I agree with you. It's to the point of absurd how entitled some athletes are. Do they not understand that without the media they wouldn't be making much money as a large portion of their salary is paid by media contracts.

If she keeps doing this I'd ensure her matches weren't televised. She doesn't want to do press conferences, then her matches shouldn't be televised.

It appears a lot of tennis fans are either too young or have forgotten all the stuff Andre Agassi had to put with when he was young. They hated him having long hair and playing in blue jean shorts. He put up with a lot of stuff from tennis organizers and the tennis media.

Federer pulls out. Max disrespect to the tournament.
But, but, but, isn't this kinda like the sprinters withdrawing from a GT after their chances of winning an early sprint stage is all over and done with?

Come on man, Federer is considered a relic now. If he withdraws because his knees got a bit rattly and he wants to show up at Wimbledon I'm willing to give him a break.

Also, I'm sure some of these kids are thrilled to play against an all-time great such a Federer, even if it's only in the early rounds.

If Djokovic did this, the media would be ALL over him right now. Since it's Federer and he can do no wrong in their minds, it's ok.

Another media darling, Serena Williams, just lost to a 21 year old Russian turned Kazakh. What will be her excuse now? Remember a few years ago how she complained to the umpire and said 'how could you do this to me, I'm a mom!' Glad that she's out. The older she's gotten, the whinier she has become, and the media just gives her a free pass each and every time.

I think as usual it's all about the money - who brings in more? Names you are already very familiar with? Or young kids who are just getting their start?

I kinda see this as a changing of the guard, a phase most sports usually go through.

Btw., and apologize for my endless edits, but who has anything against Djoko?

Personally I've got nothing against him (or even Nadal, for that matter), but you might want to create a poll to get a more balanced feel of this particular forum.

Isn't Federer still recovering from the knee issues and complications after surgery last year? Also he's not as good on clay as he is grass, so there's that as well. Wonder if the strain from a hard 4 set match may have made him realize that the knee isn't where it needs to be yet and better to be ready for Wilmbleton than continue on in the French Open knowing you're going to lose in one of the next couple of rounds anyway?

If ESPN's article is to be trusted Federer had already said, and I will quote:

"I'm just realistic and I know I will not win the French, and whoever thought I would or could win it is wrong,"

Thanks.

Ah, interesting, although he's not wrong.

Does anyone expect a final that isn't Djokovic vs Nadal? I'm fairly sure it would be a huge upset for Federer to beat one of them on clay let alone both of them.
