Don't think so. Most people call Federer the best player ever.

He is, but as "safe bet " has mentioned, during the 90s and 80s there were a lot more contenders for slams. Since Wimbledon & US are the only slams that Murray can possible win , I don't think he would have won many as Samprass and Agassi dominated the 90s while in the 80s there were McEnroe, Connors, Lendl, Edberg, Becker & Wilander. In the 70s there was Borg & Connors.
Murray would not have dominated any era and he certainly wouldn't have won too many slams.

If you think Sampras or Agassi was a better player than Federer you are an idiot.

Federer has the consistency, but Agassi was a very talented player who also won all four slams. His game was much superior to Murray and he's not far off Federer. He definitely was a better returner of serve than Federer.
Samprass lacked the wins on clay , but he was a top draw serve & Volley er.
There is still some debate whether Pete or Fed is the better player and even though I think Fed is better, you cannot dismiss people thinking otherwise as idiots.

Chapeau Federer, he was the best player today and throughout the tournament and his legacy continues to extend.

To come back from a period where Djokovic and too a certain extent Nadal had been dominating and then win a grand slam is something special because it shows he is still a great player and that he can prolong his reign.

This era though certainly has the best players of any era and Murray would certainly have enjoyed more success and already won a Grand Slam if he had been playing in any other eras.

Tennis is constantly evolving. even Federer said the level was higher in 07 than when he won in 03 and in 10 than 07 etc. Of course a top player from today would with their current skills do much better in an earlier era.

I can dismiss them as idiots because that is exactly what they are.

Novak really came into his own late in the second set. Personally i thought he was better than Murray for most of the 1st set. Quality match and Murray had a really good tournament. Like Jim Courier has just said, Novak could possibly win the Slam this year.

Hey,

I'm going into 8th grade. But I'm focusing on my college years now. I started playing tennis about a year ago, however I'm as good as my friend who has been playing for almost five years. My services are in, I have a killer forehand, a pretty good backhand and my volleys and overheads are striking. I plan to keep at my tennis playing, so what are my chances of getting a scholarship for it?Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

I am waiting here?

Thanks,

Bumping this thread because I've just seen the highlights from the Stakhovsky-Federer match and I was really moved.

Finally a true grasscourt game at Wimbledon. I've grown up in the 90's and those players who made me love the game are the attacking serve & volley players like Stefan Edberg, Pete Sampras, Richard Krajicek or Tim Henman. And in the noughties, YT enabled me to see clips from some old Laver or McEnroe matches and I so much wished I could see that live.

Though this playing style never really disappeared, it was a tragedy for me that no top10 players in the noughties practiced that style and the slowed down highbouncing new Wimby grass was so awful.

Now that match was a real tennis match. With some great touch at the net by Stakhouse. I discovered him by 2010 at New Haven and then the match vs Harrison that year was a killer as well. Always loved the guy. ;)

Who's the greatest all time tennis player?

On the women's side I'm torn between Serena Williams, Steffi Graff and Martina Navratilova.

The men's side is easier: Roger Federer.

Djoko - Del Potro has turned into an absolute classic, one of the best matches I have ever seen. Fifth set now.

Was a fantastic match.

I expect Novak to win in 4 sets in the final, aside from on clay I think him and Murray are the two best players in the world now but Murray isn't quite at the same level, although reaching 4 major finals in a row (kind of anyway) plus the Olympics is obviously very good, hopefully it will be another great match.

A really gritty performance from Murray who I think showed tremendous mental strength to win 3-0. Djokovic had the upper hand several times but Murray kept coming back and produced the winners when it mattered most. Ivan Lendl must take a great deal of credit for his work in the last 12 months, turning Murray from nearly man into a double Grand-Slam winner.

Djokovic is better overall than Murray but grass is Djokovic's weakest surface whereas for Murray its probably the strongest now.
Grass?
I thought it was clay.

Clay? If Nadal had chosen football instead of tennis Djokovic would probs be a 4 or 5 time french open champ by now. He is the only 1 who comes close to Nadal on the surface. A natural on clay, especially in the masters where he almost always makes the final.

Just bumping this thread.
With all of Nadal,Djoko and Murray winning one of the clay Masters we are gonna have an epic Roland Garros!
Shame Fed is not there but wise decision. He doesn't stand a chance in RG and focusing on Wimbledon is much better for him.

The way Murray plays the game, was tennis ever meant to be played like that?
I'm talking about the screaming and fist pumping.
It's such bad sportsmanship and it's accentuated when he plays an elegant guy like Gasquet.
From the days I played tennis, that kind of behavior was really a no-go.
And that's not that long ago.
Guys like Nadal and Murray go to show: who cares *how* you win, as long as you win.
It's one reason why I've gradually lost interest in the game.
The women's game, same story, with players like Sharapowa and Williams.

Murray is sabotaging himself half the time. And if you get annoyed by some fist bumping or cmon's, you're really a mental midget, especially if you get affected by that being a french player on Phillipe Chatrier.

Djokovic' fake injuries are worse.
