Teams & Riders The Remco Evenepoel is the next Eddy Merckx thread

Why would you say stuff like this (just one example):

About a 22 year old who has ridden one GT with poor preparation? Making posts like this with no argumentation just seems like trolling to me. You talk about "ridiculous fanboyism" but how would you describe your own behavior? Apparently it's not even a different opinion but "just facts"? You can call it an opinion I guess, a stupid opinion.

Fair enough. That was pure trolling indeed. (couldn't take the (to me unfounded) hype any longer) At that point I could not see any indication of a 3 week dominance, in spite of what a lot of peeps were wishful thinking out here. Together with RE rather unpalatable persona on and off the bike, it was too much for me. As I said, it was a knee-jerk childish reaction to the hype on this thread.

Remco has improved and matured. Believe it or not but I am happy about that. Pro cycling is cutthroat and although all champions have big egos, it's making them more relatable if they also have some degree of humility. Good for the sport.

Mind you it's still uncertain he wins this GT. But the last couple of rides he is proving himself against top names now (in a GT) and with a lot of conviction.

Probably at this point you can't accept anymore that not all my posts are always serious and that I sometimes just want to poke the bear on this forum. It's not chique, but hey, apologies if I took it a step too far. Will behave, promised:)

I now admitted and apologised for overstepping in my 1 or 2 childish posts. Yet many a righteous fan have overstepped in this forum. Particularly Logic. The vehemence with which RE is defended as the brightest cycling star on the firmament and all differing opinions are attacked is equally shitty if not worse. His habit of postulating his opinions as 'facts' and bulldozering others who disagree permeates the forum, not just this thread. I hope you get how toxic that can be and that some people will simply push back.

I'm going to leave it at that.

Have a good day ya'll.

It's weird how people have more allegiance to a random cyclist who they have no connection to, than I do to my local football team that I had a season ticket from age 3 - 18 when I moved away.
Not just RE, all the weird obsessives. If someone offered me £5 or I got to pick who won a race I'd take the money every time.

Evenepoel is day by day winning me over my Scepticism of him being able to be a GT winner. Still have doubts about his endurance for a 3 week race and wouldn't surprise me if he eventually cracked in one stage. However even if he bonk he's putting such a distance to the other riders that probably can keep the red jersey.
Since the stages were made public i always thought that the dangerous stage for Evenepoel would be the Sierra Nevada stage and i remain with that, because it's after 2 weeks of racing and because of the high altitude.
All in all i expect him to win this GT if he keeps the jersey until the end of the 2nd week.

You must be new to sports if you think that is weird, plenty of people are fans of football clubs they've never even seen in person etc. I think it's weirder when people want to make claims with near certainty about what a rider can or cannot do based on essentially nothing for no apparent reason (other than trolling I guess).

Is it actually possible to get banned around here for trolling? From what I've read on this forum I'm guessing the answer is no?

Well duh ... Where is the fun in just choosing who will win.

Yes he went deep, but not deeper than the rest I think. The first 30sec after the finish line he didn't had to lie down or wasn't heavely breathing or something. He immediately shook hands with his staff members and the look on his face was better than I expected. On the podium he looked recovered aswell. Have seen him way worse before.

Sure, but nobody takes plastic fans seriously. They are the absolute worst.

I think LIYF would pay 500 quid to have RE win this race. La flo was the same with contador. I just want to see good racing and the best rider win.

Same here but I won't deny I'm sometimes annoyed by people who make ridiculous statements to troll or trigger people (I think?) but when proven wrong are nowhere to be seen. A certain moderator comes to mind

Just so you know: I would pick who wins, place a bet and be rich!! but enjoy the £5 ;-)

Sir, this is an internet forum.

Everybody: when people are joining your team you should embrace them for seeing the light. Not blame them for not seeing it earlier.

Both sides (in this thread more than any other) have hardly covered themselves in glory. It's been like a particularly unruly kindergarten.

Even if he loses is, I now fully believe Remco will win at least one grand tour GC in his carreer.
I think it's safe to say at least that.

In a video he released:

He states:
The goal is still the same. I'm still missing a stage win and hope to get that tomorrow in the ITT. Further he still hopes for a top 10 placement since it is his first real GT.

further in that article (dutch) he mentionned he feels the fatigue and the legs feel heavy sometimes but it is to be expected after those hard days. He hope to go for victory in the ITT and than he can still recuperate for half a day and he hopes for an easy 11th stage.

He trained a lot in the mountains and altitude to simulate the sierra nevada but it still a long way before it is sunday.

Seems a 'safe' way to look at it.

You think that's more weird than people going out of their way to actively *** on a random cyclists who they have no connection to, with little to no knowledge regarding the subject, and no other reason than to piss off other people and make a fool of themselves along the way?

Which behavior do you think is weirder?

The dude was repeatedly posting "facts" about what what Evenepoel would "never" be able to do. And now he says "At that point I could not see any indication of a 3 week dominance, in spite of what a lot of peeps were wishful thinking out here." Because obviously, we picked a random cyclist, one out of a thousand or so pros, repeatedly talked about how he should have the potential to one day win a GT, completely wishful thinking, just to get lucky and found out he might actually be able to win a GT. Because there was no indication (sic). Imagine creating a topic about Felix Grossschartner and claiming for 5 years he could win a GT. Looks like we dodged a bullit! We just got lucky that this guy of whom there was no indication that he would ever be able to win a GT, now looks like the big favorite to win this Vuelta. Pheeew!

Or mayyyyyybe some of us actually knew what they were talking about and simply made realistic projections.

I applaud you for this post. I think almost everyone in this forum has posted some stupid things in the emotion of the moment (the exceptions stand out too), that's fine with me.

Regarding remco i was just really excited about him from the first time i noticed him. I can't really articulate why, but it seemed there was something very special about how he didn’t just win, but made his competition look like clowns without seemingly even trying that hard.

Check out the race report from innsbruck:

"The soon-to-be Quick-Step Floors rider was simply on another level to the competition in Innsbruck, almost single-handedly coming back from a crash and a lone chase on the climb of the Gnadenwald, before a string of attacks whittled down the rest of the field. Such was Evenepoel's dominance that the Belgian rode the final 19 kilometres on his own as the remnants of the peloton fought it out for the rest of the medals.

At times Evenepoel appeared to be riding in fast forward, while the best of the rest were made to look ordinary over the demanding Austrian course. Italy, Germany, the Czech Republic and the USA all had numbers during key stages of the race but no tactics would have unsettled Evenepoel's ride. In the end Marius Mayrhofer (Germany) claimed silver well over a minute down, with Alessandro Fancellu (Italy) in third taking bronze. What started as a race ended in a procession."

I knew he was the favourite coming in, but the performance was absolutely ridiculous, like nothing i've ever seen before.

I'm not usually a good scout for talent, but with remco it just felt obvious, i guess like people watching a young ullrich, lemond or contador. And that's why i was so enthusiastic about him going pro so early.
