Teams & Riders The Remco Evenepoel is the next Eddy Merckx thread

So far he collected the following jerseys:

Belgian Champs RR
World Champs RR

Belgian Champs TT
European Champs TT

At the European Champs RR and the World Champs TT he already got a 2nd place.

If he manages to win the World Champs TT this year I wonder if he would try to somehow fit the European Champs RR into his program to try to complete the whole set already this year (at age 23!).

The article explains what others feel when trying to follow Remco. They simply suffocate in his wheel. You need an outstanding TT engine to follow him and then you still need to have the energy and punch to beat him in a sprint.

When did Remco last lose a serious one-day race he targeted?
Lombardia 2021? His form was pretty erratic still coming back from his crash…

Problem is he hasn’t targeted enough in his career yet.

2020 was all about weeklong races and then Lombardia crash (when he was at minimum in position to win).

2021 was a definite mixed bag with bad perfs at Olympics and Lombardia, but some excellent one day perfs otherwise.

2022 really only LBL, San Seb and worlds: jackpot!

2023 LBL, next up San Seb and Worlds again.

I kind of agree with what was posted up thread that he can be in contention at 95% form in a one day race, but needs 100% and perfect altitude training to get his dominant climbing legs. That’s why I don’t mind if he does only one GT a year.

Side note: he is pretty different from the Pog’s, Vingo’s and Ayuso’s of this world, in body shape, but also his ability to win a race like this one today. Pog can do so many things, some better than Remco, for sure. But dropping a peloton on a flat course is really not one of them. That talent is most definitely Merckxian.

Remco doesn't have the climbing legs to win the TDF this year. But he would top 5, quite possibly in a similar manner that Jalabert did in 1995. I could see Remco doing a bit better as he could get not only bonus seconds, but I could see him gaining time on a few of the flat stages, just racing like he did today

Now that I think about it, a Remco who is climbing like at the TDS, but TTing like the grio may make for the most exciting Tour.

He'd lose big in the high mountains. Gain big in the TTs (if they actually include them). Question would be how much time could he make up on the flat.

I'd say he'd have a chance if we went back to real time bonuses in the early 2000s, where there were 2 or 3 intermediate sprints each stage, and the bonuses were 6-4-2, along with stage finishes giving 20-12-8 second bonuses

I can't believe it will be 5 weeks before we see Remco racing again.

What will we do in that time??
5 weeks without scrolling through Procyclingstats each evening to check how RRRRRemco EEEEEEvenepoel performed.
Life is tough!!!
Enjoy the quiet month of July and watch Vive Le Velo in the evening with a glass of red wine. There will probably be a lot of drama but nothing to stress about.

Let's hope he posts most of his training rides on Strava so we can discuss every detail of his KOM's and we can claim that nobody will come close to him at the Worlds and he'll win La Vuelta by at least 10 minutes.
