Teams & Riders The Remco Evenepoel is the next Eddy Merckx thread

My original question (which you think is weird) was this: If you were Remco's teammate would you train hard next year to help him in the Tour?

I posed it because there was a report that at least one rider on SQ was upset with Remco about the 2023 season. I asked it because some think that Remco could win the TDF next year. I find that to be nonsensical, because during stage 13 of the Vuelta Remco showed that he is soft on high mountain stages. So here is my more nonsensical question:
Can Remco defeat Pog, Rog, and Vingegaard at the TDF? o_O

he should clean up the giro with it being a traditional GT and go to the TDF to have some fun

You do realize there are riders who train hard to help Landa get 8th in the vuelta?

He won the crystal bike in Belgium which is basically for the best Belgian rider of the season. After the event there was an interview.

At the presentation of the Crystal Bicycle, Remco Evenepoel admitted that he has not gotten into his clothes in recent months on and off the bicycle. "It was an unpleasant period."

Since the Tour of Spain, Remco Evenepoel has only ridden the Tour of Lombardy, but due to the buzzing merger issues, these were busy and unpleasant times for the winner of the Crystal Bike.

"I thought I would prepare quietly for Lombardy for 3 weeks, but that was not the case at all. It was certainly not optimal."

"Those rumors may not have just emerged, there must have been some truth to them. But it was difficult for me to say anything about it, because I knew nothing about it."

"It was an unpleasant period. You cycle with the Soudal-Quick Step jersey, but you don't know whether you will still be wearing that jersey next year. But, all's well that ends well."

"Frustrations and a bit of clashes"
For Evenepoel, the past year is clearly divided into two parts. Everything went optimally until the Giro, after his retirement there he had to improvise.

"I know myself: I need 100% preparation. I never had that after the Giro."

External concerns also played a role in why things never quite worked out, for example in the Vuelta. "There has always been a storm around me and the team. That storm has never subsided."

"That has meant that there have often been frustrations and some clashes in the past period. With a view to next year, the entire outside world should know this."

Because Evenepoel does not want to get stuck in frustration and is already looking ahead to his debut in the Tour. “Everything in the month of July,” he says bluntly.

With what purpose? "A stage win would be great. And then I want to see how long I can follow the two kings of the Tour, Vingegaard and Pogacar. Then we'll see where the ship ends up in Nice."

Anyone else think this is a bad idea?

If a meaningful GC result is the ultimate goal, I mean. Is it?

Come on bro I know you are making a joke but there is no riders at Bahrain who spent their seasons entirely working for Landa and didn't get their own opportunities. Landa also never came 8th in a grand tour and without jumbo ridiculousness would be a podium threat at la vuelta that just happened.

All these guys are training like animals to show their best level in the top races assigned to them, for themselves or for the team

A GC result with a stage win seems the logical choice for him. He wouldn’t go purely to stage hunt and doing the Giro instead yet again is just delaying him getting his feet wet at the Tour. Maybe another Vuelta happens and he’s stage hunting before week 3 again, but if he commits to GC he could win 1-2 stages and still get a top 10 or better even with a blowup.

He isn't going to go completely in the red. He'll ride his own pace if it goes too quickly. Look at the Vuelta this year, the stage Kuss won, Roglic and Vingegaard were able to ride away from him, and he decided to ride his own pace.

Dude, he LITERALLY STATES HIS GOAL and you are quoting it lol - ITS NOT A MEANINGFUL GC RESULT!!
Maybe that is your goal for him?

Sorry for all the Remco haters, they have 9 months to think up snappy comments for when he drops time on GC and now he's not targeting GC

Maybe read it again?

See how long he can follow Vingegaard&Pogacar, he says? What does that mean? To what end do you think? See how long he can follow, then after he saw that stop trying for the rest of the tour? If he can follow decide he proved he can and stop trying? If he can't but ends up 5th on a day, then stop trying? Try only one day? No, he's saying that he wants to try to be as close as possible to the 2 in GC in the end.

Actually it all means nothing really, he's saying what you can expect somebody in his position to say. Nothing wrong with it, perfectly sensible answer. Do your best and see what the result is. There's 0 need to analyze this, what else is he supposed to do or say?

He says the same thing ahead of every GT. He doesn’t enter them except to win. Just trying to lower the expectations.

I can't understand what point you're making. Is 7th or 15th not close enough to 8th? It sounds like you agree that every pro shows up to the Tour in the best shape they can without caring if some random message board troll thinks their leader has a chance of winning, so why you have to perceive a disagreement where none exists is beyond my comprehension.

I’m most confused about what Remco’s ambition is long term? Does he want to be a GC guy? Does he want to be a one day guy who wins stages occasionally?

I thought he was all out on GC but I’m not convinced he’ll be able to hold on to Vinge or even Pog, especially if his attitude is to just hang on. Will he go the full traditional one day stage races before the TDF and do less one days?
