Teams & Riders The Remco Evenepoel is the next Eddy Merckx thread

I didn't see either of them drop Matteo, Remco, or Brandon. I didn't see them drop each other either for that matter.
I get that reasoning. And don't forget that the weather in PN was awful. But Remco is no Vingegaard uphill (nobody is, at the moment).
The best thing that happened this race was Remco making tactical mistakes so we got a great race until the final day. Just think about it, if Remco would have been in yellow before the weekend, the action he instigated wouldn't have happened the same way. It's a shame he didn't win, as, who knows, he will never win this race if Vingegaard / Pog / Ayuso or whoever pops up will show up in the coming 5 years, but it was a wake-up call not to sheepishly follow team tactics, ignoring the race situation, like he did on Friday, but race more like he did for his whole life, i.e. attack first and see what is left of the competition.

Remco values time with his family instead of going on altitude like his rivals. He values the friendship of his directeur sportif, over having a DS in the car with a more sound tactical pedigree. It's all about priorities. Had he either gone on altitude before this race, or had another DS been in the car during PN, he would probably have won this. Can't have it all. I'll be curious to see whether they are going to put Lodewyck in the car come TDF and have him call the shots. If not epic, it could be comical at least.

At least his base form is on point. Let's see how they can prepare him for the Tour.

Really good race. Glad to see Remco animate the race and take a podium spot. Was a bit surprised to see Skjelmose get dropped, not surprised to see McNulty falter. Stage was a gift, but I think he'd have gotten it anyway, and I think so did Jorgensen.

Jorgensen was ridiculous. This is a Visma domestique in the Tour. Crazy. Tour's gonna be nothing but Tadej and Vingo.
If Jorgenson thought he could win the sprint, he would have sprinted. He hadn't won a stage yet. And as certain people are always trying to tell us, the whole peloton supposedly hates Evenepoel's guts, so why would Jorgenson give him the stage if he knew he could win it himself.

I think Evenepoel could improve a lot before the Tour. His performance reminds me a lot of his 2022 performances in Itzulia etc. Not bad, but not good enough to boss it, getting tactically outplayed. Then the first 10 days of the Vuelta, he was maybe the best he's ever been.

"With a view to the Tour, we made the choice not to do an altitude internship this spring. We can already be very positive with the feeling that we now have without altitude." - Remco

does this mean SOQ think they will benefit more from a single altitude camp before the TDF taking them through to the Olympics?

The year remco won the Vuelta did he do more than one altitude camp?

He obviously didn't sprint for the win, and as I said above, Jorgenson seemed to know he wasn't going to win the sprint. But he didn't try, and he led Evenepoel out, which I'll comfortably call a gift.

Certainly he'll improve more. So will the mutants on the other teams.

Jogensen is a real talent. Visma has had little to do with his success and he can ride like a team player.

I have seen Van Wilder's program, and he will be going on altitude twice before the Tour. I can only assume Evenepoel will not do less.

Jorgenson has talent. He appeared to me to be a young rider on a slow rise. Able (at his best) to compete for some wins, but never really having a big win.

Comfortably winning this race and looking like he could have done a lot more is an entirely different level for him. IMO. He has never looked like a rider who could win big races, win easily, or win comfortably.

I don't see how one could claim Visma had/has nothing to do with this. He's a very different rider on this team, quite apparently.

Yes, everybody will obviously... But his margin is potentially bigger
Though this was compared to all the other GC riders for the years to come.
I'm quite sure Evenepoel's margin to improve is bigger than Jorgenson's
But it was only compared with Jorgenson
Err yes. So it makes sense that he will improve less over the coming months
And only the coming months.

I'm sorry but Remco is no way near Jonas Vingegaard or Tedej Pogocar's level. With all due respect to Jorgensen who is a very talented rider, Remco should be dropping him and should be cleaning this race up. It was almost like Remco was working for Jorgensen on the final climb.
Remco is a world class one day rider, but for the grand Tours he just isn't anywhere near the level of the 'big two'..

Guys like Hindley, A. Yates, S. Yates, Bernal, Roglic, Kuss, Gall... and a few more are probably better climbers in the high mountains as well.

There are a lot of examples of riders who go to Visma and go up a few levels, look at Cristophe Laporte. Also, look the drop off of Roglic this year since leaving, looks like a different rider.
