Sometimes I do wonder how this thread is so big already.

Then I see this and I stop wondering.

 It's inevitable, though. Any thread with a title like this one, regardless of it's nature, will always be conducive to these types of discussions.

My god you're insufferable sometimes.
It mainly shows how clueless this guy is. I mean, completely no idea of what he's talking about, and you'd have to wonder why he even is on a cycling forum. Completely baseless bashing of a 19 year old. Best youth (vs a top talent of 3 years older) in San Juan. Podium of the ITT in San Juan. First MTF in UAE, ahead of Sivakov, Lambrecht, Nibali, Meintjes, Porte... Only 12s behind Dumoulin and within a minute of Roglic, Valverde... 4th on the queen stage in Turkey and the GC. But hey, he didn't do great on a short technical course, so let's mock him!

This dude has ZERO credibility. Putting him on ignore.

Disliking someone for having different opinions is the definition of bigotry ...

It's not the differing of opinion, it's your bullying, aggressive style that rubs the wrong way.

Like Panda Claws mentioned, he seems to have crashed before the race even started. Guess Romandie won't be his first real test anymore. I hope, like Dekker said, he's not another Gesink or Kelderman. Like Logic said, his bike handling seems to be subpar and he probably won't get to the level of riders who have been cycling since being kids. When will we finally get to see him really have a proper go at it

He's going full gas for the GC, and he's come (almost) fully prepared (guess crashing diminishes your "fully prepared" a little bit), but since he's only 19 "fully prepared" probably translates into "lower/just outside top-10". Taking GC here, in case that wasn't obvious.

His Instagram suggested that he fell and injured himself before the prologue even started.

He was interviewed after the prologue, he made no mention of a crash hampering his performance. Looking at his instagram post, it seems like some abrasions but nothing serious. He simply said he wasn't a prologue specialist... which is technically correct i suppose. Too short and too much twisting and turning in a city center.

When we'll see him have a proper go? This week.

It's not even a difference of opinion, because it hardly qualifies as an opinion to begin with. It's like saying 5+5=11 and when people say you're wrong, claiming it's your opinion that it's 11 and not respecting that opinion is being a bigot.

The kid has been smashing it as much as could possibly be expected. There is a topic in the clinic for him, because people don't believe he can do what he does, without doping. And then there is this joker that tries to badger him when he loses 13 seconds in a prologue compared to Roglic and 6 to Kruijswijck.

Has he stated this somewhere that he was going full gas for GC?

Yes, multiple times. Not specifically in the prologue, but in Romandie.

1st stage Romandie - 80th at 9m 3s
I think it’s a fine performance, he beat home experienced men

I agree, probably fine. But note that your GC winner of the Tour of the Alps is 21 and beat an in-form Nibali. Having said that, two years at age 19 is a long time and a lot of good things can happen.

Jesus the pressure on the poor kid ....if on here is anything to go by
Wish he stayed amateur a few more years and didnt have these expectations on himas so young an age

If people dont let up he may never win big races

That's a very weird sort of causality.

Nothing to worry about. A 19yo kid who had a flat tyre, no teammates and the team car was too far back couldn't come back to a hard riding peloton in a difficult stage.

What a surprise. Man, even Chris Froome would find it hard to come back on his own from that

I think he just made the stupid decision to be born in Belgium.

I'm positively surprised by how Remco is doing in his first year as a pro. He's been consistent in all of the races he has raced, which is outstanding at such a young age.

That being said, coping with pressure at young age should be expected from elite athletes. They all endure this at some stage of their careers. Michael Phelps was touted to become the greatest swimmer ever when he was 16. LeBron James featured on Sports Illustrated cover as a high schooler. And there are many other examples.

If he can't do it (and mind, I really have no idea wether this is the case) he better learn soon.

If Remco couldnt, Froome obviously couldnt either. That seems to be the most logical conclusion.

I really look forward to watching im on Saturday!

And yet, he willingly took on those expectations by signing with DQS rather than choosing to race for a year or two in the U23s. There's no sign to me that he's cracking or can't handle the pressure, of course. But he will be in the media spotlight for a long time, I fear, and depending on how he handles it as he matures it could be either a distraction or a motivation.

Was this the explanation? I still haven't read anything about the cause.

Found it. So he is also on painkillers because if his shoulder. He crashed over the cables at the finish during the recon of the prologue.

"Ook vandaag reed het toptalent nog met een erg pijnlijke schouder rond in Zwitserland - hij moest zelfs pijnstillers slikken. Een rol van betekenis kon de youngster uit Schepdaal ook niet spelen in de eerste rit in lijn, al had dat ook te maken met een lekke band op een vervelend moment. Evenepoel moest volgens ploegleider Davide Bramati te lang wachten op de neutrale wagen, waardoor hij helemaal alleen viel."

I dont know what you were doing at 19 ...I was at uni ,concentrating on having a ball and where I could, getting money to go drinking...I certainly wasnot carrying the expectation of a nation that I was going to be as good if not better than the greatest cyclist ever

Yes all sportsmen need to handle pressure but in good time and after they have had time to mature away from the spotlight
