Could be about Froome getting > 1M€ in the past. Although, I have my doubts they still pay that much.
According to different Podcasts I heard, ASO would not pay start bonuses. That's even less than a few barrels of beer ;-)

Patrick Lefèvre was have said that the compensation they receive would be more beds, better hotels/accommodation,...
Not sure if this is correct, but that's the only info/sources I have.

Anyway, I tend to believe €€€ is not the driving force for Remco's participation to the Giro.
 
Remco would not stay at SQS (Ineos can put "a bit" more on the table).

INEOS is nowadays more known for losing riders and filling its team with cheap young guys than for actively recruiting top riders. Imo, that British oligarch Radcliff is just a show-off with his mid-table football team in the French league. He desperately wanted to be in the news for buying Chelsea and now Man Utd, of course neither of which happened. There was talk for several years that he would become part owner of Mercedes F1 team, but as far as I know that didn't happen either.

Sounds to me like someone who is very interested in how much they are offering to participate.

It happened. Ineos owns the team in equal parts with Daimler and Toto Wolff.

Of course, with their midas touch, since Ineos stepped in as an owner of the team they went from being the dominant force of the sport to a team who releases cringey public statements after they are beaten fair and square by a customer team in the first race of the season.

I certainly do not claim to know the truth, so I speak only on the basis of my gut feeling.

It is common knowledge that Patrick Lefevre is not averse to money, but can you blame him. He has to compete with a "modest" budget with UAE, JV, Ineos,...
Only - I stress this is gut feeling - I don't think the decision to have Remco start in the Giro was dictated by the start bonus they would or would not pay.
 
Remco, Rog, and Pog all easily took care of business in their opening WT races
They all won, but with clear differences of strength.

The scary thing is, Remco, I believe, had the largest margin of victory. Not even in form, but due to smart racing and using all terrain, not just the climbs
His margin of victory was a few seconds larger, but I'm not sure I'd count the TTTs as smart racing.

I no longer wonder why MvdP was so happy at the Giro and completely emptied himself with all those pointless attacks. Better hotels = less chance of "knock and run"

We are unlikely to know the full truth about participation fees... But Sagan skipped the cobbled classics in 2020 to take part in the Giro. To me that really suggests there are serious sums of money involved... not just better hotel rooms.

Even in 2020, Sagan's number was up. If you know you're going to be making a spectacle of yourself, other options are more likely to look attractive. It might not have taken that much as one might think.
 
Honestly never seen a number other than Froome getting like 1.5 million or something in 2018?

I can see it getting somewhat high if the Giro is desperate for a star rider. Like I don't think Mathieu van der Poel shows up for a few barrels of beer.
Sounded like they paid Lance a hefty bit back in his comeback days. But to your point, I've never seen a number that seemed real or confirmed.

The Texan was given large appearance fees by various race organisers in 2009, including those from the Tour Down Under and Giro d’Italia. It was reported that each of the two made a multi-million dollar payment.

Froome might have been a seperate Israeli sponsor to get him to race there, seeing as he later joined that team?

I know in tennis it's common for smaller ATP tournaments to have a budget for starting fees, and those tournaments will pay out bigger sums in starting fees than prize money.

I believe the Teams operate so scientifically and have so much data that they do know what they are doing. Only, riders are not robots, of course.
I'm more afraid that Remco is getting hungry after seeing Roglic and Pogacar last week and that there will be a prestige duel during Catalunya that would cost him too much in preparation for the Giro.
Hope SQS can calm down Remco.

Remco must be getting FOMO on the spring classics (besides Liege). Despite his track record on cobbles and gravel I bet he’ll get an itchy trigger finger for those races soon.
