Teams & Riders The Remco Evenepoel is the next Eddy Merckx thread

A completely different discussion, following a bit on what has been said in the WVA topic. Since the Olympic RR is before the ITT, should Remco go all out during the RR? The profile isn't really suited to his strengths, and after last years WC it might make more sense to give him a free roll. Try to get away, but if it fails, just ride for WVA and don't go all out. Save some energy for the ITT.
If i remember correctly, OG TT is short (37k?) and flat. The RR has substantially more vertical meters than RVV for instance but no/less cobbles. Neither typically tailored to him, but the RR -due to its length- could suit him every bit as much as the TT imho.

Plus the road race is unlikely to be a corner-fest like it was in Glasgow.

Hell yes, he should go all out. The Olympic RR is chaos galore with teams consisting of a maximum of 4 riders. That's a situation in which he thrives. 10 meters and he's gone, never to be seen again.
That's right, forgot about only 4 riders. But I guess someone will just target his wheel like Pogacar did in the WCRR last year. Not sure he'll be able to get away.

It was mostly because it was a circuit, with corners. Less than last years WC RR though.

Bottom right is the circuit.

It's even more impressive if you compare it in relative terms:
  • In 2022, Remco went 10" faster than a Van Wilder who found his marks in his new team
  • In 2024, Remco went 30" faster than a confirmed Van Wilder who seems to be a man in form based on his first results
I'm really curious to see how this potential improvement translates in his first races but the greatest about this it that its team may have learned that Remco staying off the bike a little longer can lead to greater performance.
That tells us nothing other than that your speculation is favorable to Remco.

He turned 24 and is past his prime. He better plans his retirement. The hype is over.
Wow he really is 24 already... I thought he was 22 or something. He has no time to waste then and start winning some important races. No more Tour of Norway, Tour of Belgium, UAE Tour and Clasica San Sebastian... that was in the past few years when his camp tried to keep the hype around him going... and they succeded. But now it's time to go against the big boys and be competitive there. He has the talent for sure.

Doesn’t he have like 60 pro wins so far?

I might be missing sarcasm. I’m dense like that.
No, he has 50 wins. But if you don't count the Tour of Belgiums, Tour of Norways, Vuelta a Burgos, Vuelta San Juan, San Sebastian... all those minor races, then you get to 15-16 wins, which is less than Ivan Sosa for example. But he'll get there. He still has 4 or 5 years good in him. And if he wins a couple of Tour de Suisse with a rainbow jersey already on his palmares, he can become the new Rui Costa. An improved one.

surely the poster who said Remco does not win important races knows that UAE and CSS are WT races

Also, small races like LBL, la Vuelta, the world TT and RR championships as well
They might be WT, but UAE tour is basically who of the Adam Yates brothers is the best Adam Yates brother... and Adam Yates usually wins...
CSS is the classic nobody cares about and noone targets it besides Remco and some local riders from pro conti teams. It's basically a spanish Trofeo Laigueglia.

LBL, Vuelta and World RR championships are of course big wins. I counted them in those 16 wins I mentioned above. Tour of Pologne win is also among those.

Remco can only dream of reaching the level of the mighty World Champion, Rui Costa and the legendary Tour de la Provence and Vuelta a Burgos winner, Ivan Sosa.

That’s true, and he believes he can win in any route anyway so he won’t hold back
The problem wasn't so much the course in Glasgow per se. There were two other important reasons. One being his mind was set on the TT all year and wasn't going to bury himself in the RR unless he was sure to be able to finish it off. The other was the tactics of the Danes that kept him on the back foot all race so he needed to keep wasting energy closing gaps. So it was more of a combination of these factors. Had they ridden Glasgow like they did Wollongong, he could just as well have been gone at one point, chosing his own pace and his own lines. On a course where it's easier to move up, such a tactic would not work nearly as well though.

Johnymax going full troll. Interesting.
So tell us Johny, how many wins does Ivan Sosa have, when you don't count the Vuelta a Burgos and other small wins?
I'm only half trolling. You are right about Sosa, he has no big wins at all. You cant compare him to Remco.

With Rui Costa it get's more complicated. He also, like Remco, targeted a race nobody beside some up and coming riders and local riders like Mathias Frank targeted. But usually he went against a one week stage race legend The Great Simon Špilak. And Tour de Suisse is worth a lot more than CSS, we know that.
On the other hand, Remco also has two LBLs, but against Hermans and Buitrago...

So I checked at procyclingstats and looked at the comparision between the two and I was surprised what I saw. Rui Costa is comfortably ahead of Remco right now. Of course the Portoguese is past his prime already and Remco has still a couple of good years ahead of him, so things might change. But for now, like Shakira said, stats don't lie:
