Remco probably has a lot going for it. He was back at the top too soon after his serious injury. After that it was a bit weaker. Now the slump at the Tour. But I think there's also a lot of psyche involved. All the stress about the possible team-change. The pressure that he still has to / wants to show something. And then there's a young German rider on the team he might switch to who shows that he can ride for a podium. That means he is now fighting directly against a potential team-mate who may even be able to beat him. And then Roglic, who he is supposed to succeed, is also doing well.
It's probably just too much coming together.

Wow, just started watching just to see remco abandon. there goes 1/3 of desire to watch this tour. Already 1/3 gone after Pogacar won this tour 2 days ago. Just gonna watch the last 10 kms or so from now on. I mean, tour been decided, remco gone, and third place will go to either Lipo or Roglic. Not much left to play for.
Not sure where to go from here. Should they do a full reset? But Remco already targeted quite a few goals after this tour.
Personally i would only ride European Road Race, and target fall classics. Forget everything else and start building that base. But I doubt Remco can just give up on San Sebastian, WC, ... .
I hope they choose a full reset. Both mentally and physically he seems to need it.

I hope that I am wrong but I wouldn't be shocked if Remco retires from cycling soon. He already hinted at that this winter but his wife apparently convinced him otherwise.
If this DNF was a mental thing as I suspect its terrible for the prospect of him finding a new team and on Quick Step he just doesn't seem happy.

i don't want to see remco on a bike (in a race setting) till start of october.
Just reset and build that base. Have a go at UEC and Lombardy and forget about the rest.

Damn that stinks. At least he was able to get a stage win out of it. Hopefully he can recover now build from this and doesn’t turn into another Andy scenario.
doing the giro for training would have been better. Got for the TTs and maybe 1-2 stages. Like Ullrich used to do

With all the training already done, you don't think he can get physically ready for UEC and Lombardy?
10 days of rest, then start building for 2 months for those goals?

Pauwels talking about WC but i would not go to Kigali. Just focus on European Road Race (and European TT) and Lombardy. Going to Kigali is a lot of extra travel and 3 weeks less of prep for UEC and Lombardy

If he wants to jump teams this Tour isn't good for his market value. Bora-Rb will be "nah, we have Lipo and Pellizzari for the upcoming years and Finn for the future" and Ineos have an incoming Vauquelin, who can probably still improve a decent amount.
My suspicion is that remco is the type of rider who needs a perfect preparation to reach his goals. A little bit off and he struggles.
World RR will be tough for Remco, while the hilly ITT could be tricky.

Red Bull Bora have a terrible classics squad (or at least a severely underperforming one). I'm certain Evenepoel's one day abilities are a factor in their interest.

I disagree. staying in the tour would be bad for his mental health after what happened today.
And not sure how it can help him physically when it seems his batteries are empty.
