"Leaving the Tour was the hardest decision I've made in a long time. But it was the right one. For once, I truly listened to my body. And I hope that moment sends a message, especially to the young riders watching: It's okay to stop. It's okay to feel tired. It's okay to be human. Sometimes stepping back is the strongest thing to do."

What more could he have said?

To your question at the end: because they are stupid yes-men, who seem to operate on the assumption that "things have a way of working themselves out," as a famous TV character once put it.

Didn't know about the broken rib. Had some cracked ribs myself a few weeks back. Kinda shocking how my body just wouldn't produce after the injury, just now starting to feel normal on the bike (It'll be 5 weeks tomorrow). I'm an old fart, but even still. It takes it outta ya.

I think the questions about what the team did, the numbers, we'll never know the answers. While I think there are better teams for him in terms of managing the career of a stage racer, I wonder how much is him pushing, and how much is the team. I think folks are too quick to blame the team.

At the end of the day, Remco and no one else, is responsible for his career, his results, and his health. He needs to hire/join the best team possible to manage his career, listen to them. Then decide for himself. He is one of the few riders good enough to own his career in this way. If (and that's a big if) he hasn't been doing this, he needs to start now.

there is really only one alien. vingo at least has an unreal VO2.

pog has made an extraordinary leap (reminds me so of armstrong now).

and so have Wellens, Narvaez, and Almeida.

Adam Yates only podiumed a GT once he moved to UAE (and while working for Pog).

It makes even less sense that he was at the Nationals reading that post, especially before the Tour given all those things he mentioned. It was risky for many reasons and he injured himself. Ask Almeida how the rib feels.

I was not a supporter of the move to Red Bull last year as they completely fell apart in the TDF.

but now, remco could learn a thing or two from the likes of rog (who is proving how experience pays off). he could also benefit from having the likes of lipo and pellizari. they could support him when he is in optimal shape. but he could also support them when he is not. he has proven to be an amazing team-player, and this might take some pressure off.

I don't honestly think he is that interested in doing the Vuelta again -- watch as vingo and pog do it as many times as they need until they win.

he should have trained, built slowly, and only when he knew he was completely back to himself (recovery, watts etc.) should he have raced. even if that meant all he did was the fall (or next year).

Or ... he does everything not to let his team down, wins a stage, helps his sprinter and only quits when the team asks it, not to hurt his later goals. Remco is a 100% team player.
