Teams & Riders The Remco Evenepoel is the next Eddy Merckx thread

Agreed, At least Bardet could climb with the gc favourites , Remco cannot
The climbing level was pretty close between the best guys back then. Groups of 7-8 would regularly go into the last km's of a summit finish together. That was SKY-train era, now TP and JV freaking nuke everyone on the first half of HC climbs - or they decide to go crazy on penultimate climbs. NEVER happened in SKY era.

And if Froome hadn't gone to the Tour, Rigoberto Uran would have won a Tour. The difference is that he was the next ; Remco isn't even the second, and that's crucial in the Tour.

Remco has faced these rivals, just as Pogacar didn't win San Remo due to a VDP. There's no point in complaining. What matters is that Remco has one more rider ahead of him than Quintana had to win the Tour. Quintana had one, Remco had two.

When we have to make those kinds of assumptions, we're aware that Remco will be conditioning his upcoming seasons for something he isn't second favorite either.

I agree that it was not close. But Pinot, Menchov and Valverde would probably not be considered favorite if #1 and #2 did not attend, while that is true for Remco in all GT he will do. Meaning he is the favorite if TP and JV don't go to a GT.
Menchov won 2 GTs in his life. Are you really saying he would not be a favorite if Andy and Contador weren't in the Tour?
Remco is a favorite because of his name, you put him in the Giro next year and he will be considered number one favorite however I'm inclined to think he wouldn't win the Giro.

He is a future TDF winner and the 3rd place shows this imo.
I will not forget this. In 2-4 years, I hope you are here.

"However, this is a move that is all about the Tour de France, both for Evenepoel, his new team, and the sponsors that have made it all happen. And there are many signs that point towards the Belgian's chances improving.

But at the same time, it's a gamble – it's wagering everything on this bold move, without any guarantee of success. Both parties can control a lot, and they've done their best to put themselves in the best position possible, but in the era of Pogačar and Vingegaard's Tour de France domination, there is still a very big chance that Remco Evenepoel will never win the Tour de France.
Evenepoel had to be in it to win it, and he had to make this move to give himself the best chance, but make no mistake – achieving what he wants is still going to be a huge, career-defining challenge."

I think red bull just might have signed him to bolster their classics campaign and have a good chance in the worlds.
They must know he can’t win the tour, they give him the golden goose treatment about being team leader but reality is that’s not what he’s there for. A shrewd investment from red bull
Just stop. Only one race matter enough for a sports marketing company like Red bull and it's the tour. The reason they sign him is because he is the chosen one. He will win the tour for them.

But they already have a better rider for the Tour, Lipowitz, you need consistency , he’s also German, he’s perfect for them. Remco will be there to help Lipo in the end, if they chose Remco over Lipo for the tour they are on a hiding to nothing and the signing defeats its own purpose

I'm saying that Remco is correctly regarded as the 3rd best GC rider in the world despite not having the results to back up that perception. I believe bad luck is the reason for that.

Remco is the most promising rider in the world in the sense that his chance of winning the Tour is higher than anyone else's barring JV and TP.

The reason they signed him is because Pogacar and Vingegaard aren't on the market. Those 2 can win the Tour. They also bought Roglic because they didn't have the opportunity to buy Vingegaard or Pogacar.
Don't fool yourself. If you are saying their focus is on the Tour, it's not Remco who will give them what they want.

Are you trolling me? Remco is way better than Lipowitz.

Nationality don't matter for an international company like RB.

I had plenty of time to prepare the Tour but let's wait another year.
With Remco is always the next year.

Pick me! Pick me! I know the answer! Pick me!
Not at all, Lipowitz finished third at the tour, Remco did not finish.
Lipowitz finished nearly 2 minutes ahead of Remco at Dauphine.
Maybe ‘better’ is not the the right word just yet, but,
He has the momentum and upwards career trajectory. Remco’s is spluttering all over the place.
Lipo is the basket where red bulls eggs should be placed.

It means his podium finish is the most hyped ever, when he was miles behind the top 2.
I don't see much difference to what Menchov did in 2010, Pinot 2014, Valverde in 2015 for example.

It's not like he was "close" to the winner like Bardet in 2017 or Franck Schleck in 2011.
You called me out of being accountable for what I write but it really helps if you check some data before posting things too. None of the riders you mention had climb performances like Remco did in 2024 or even in 2022. None of them have his TT capabilities. Take away the two best climbers of all time and Remco most likely wins the 2024 TdF. His climb performance then was also better than Lipowitz. So, yes, there is some reason to be hopefull while at the same time recognize that there are two better and one at level that needs to drop to have a chance to win. Most here know this and he knows this as well.
