It would seem some of you have not experienced death yet, good luck to you.

Its not about being remembered by some racing.

Its about the rest of the blokes who rode over the not yet dried blood of a fellow rider, a friend, son, a brother, a lover, a soon to be father who now lies cold.

Yesterday they knew him, ate with him, spoke to him, rode with him, today he is dead. Do you want them to do cartwheels as well as race?

The elite Peleton is a close bunch. Would you go off to golf tomorrow if your Brother dropped dead in front of you today on the golf course? Would he be honoured by some good golfing the next day?

They are not up to racing today, they dont want to because they dont feel like it and out of respect for a brother, get it?

I will tell you what usually happens in tragic, but mercifully rare occasions.
The peloton will express it's sadness by typifying what the peloton is all about.
They will ride as a single entity, the whole length of the course, at 30-35kph.
Faces will be stoney, expressions somber. There will be the minimum of conversation.
Each team will take a turn at the head of the procession, riding line abreast.
Those who line the route will applaud, but not cheer.
There will be impromptu sites of commiseration, farewell messages along the way.

At the finishing town, LEOPARD will be brought to the front and cross the line, hands joined. The 4 jersey wearers will follow just behind, while the remainder of the peloton keeps a respectful distance.

Today, the Giro is not a race, but a memorial procession.

This is as it should be.

Anyone wanting and expecting to see racing today, should put aside their petty desires and unite with the whole of the cycling community in this expression of grief, but also a celebration of a sporting life.

I don't post on here very often, but I can't believe some people are complaining that the riders won't race today. Sad and pathetic.

I knew there were some fools on this forum but some of the insensitive posts over the last 2 days are unbelievable. You know who you are - and you should be ashamed of yourselves.

Everyone please give it a rest, the decision has been made, there is no race today. Yes they will ride slower, yes the stage will finish later - but it doesn't matter. Respect those who are suffering today, this isn't about us, it's about them.

Please be very considerate in making your posts. Half of me tells me there is no race so this thread is no longer needed - but I think it should stay as we watch and pay our respects.

If the decision is to leave this thread open, can it be cleared on any insensitive posts.

These guys risks their necks every day to basically entertain us. When they lose someone from their ranks in the act of racing then the least thing that could be done for that small, elite community is that they get a day to memorialize him in a matter they choose. Today the peloton can mourn together. Tommorow they can honor him again by racing.

Sport has no worth today IMO.

Nah, the ignore function does that. I've only ever used it once before on a discussion board but the character of some people on here has made me use it again. :(

Neutralised or not I doubt I can watch this stage.

I might not be able to bring myself to see any of this Giro.

Watch it and remember that these guys do it for the love of the sport and i doubt one of them would change that. Watch it and think of those whose time has come to a premature end before their time. I know i will watch it thinking of Wouter, Casartelli, other riders and my family members who have passed away and rejoice in their memory.

Thank you for explaining the traditional form of rememberance which is totally appropriate at this time. Normally we all applaud the traditions of cycling and in this instance it is no different.
