From pillows to Pinarellos: Inside Team Sky's marginal-gains world

Surely it must have something new in it to be published today?

"Team Sky were the first to start cooldowns after a race, and the other teams called us crazy to begin with," he says. "Now, name me a WorldTour team who doesn't cool down post race. It provokes recovery and for us there is no other option."

Well not yet... lets read on...

Among the carbon, Lycra, tools and rubber you might come to expect from a World Tour cycling team, we were also shown around some of the other supplies with which the marginal gains of Team Sky are truly showcased.

With memory foam pillows and mattresses (with different thicknesses for different riders), hypoallergenic bedding, dehumidifiers, air purifiers, air conditioning units and heaters, Team Sky ensures every rider gets the best possible rest during races. Combined with a dedicated team of carers preparing, cleaning and laundering each hotel room night after night the infrastructure behind the riders before and after each race is astounding

Pillows? Ok, we're heard about that, other teams have pillows, riders were using their own 10 years ago... anything else?

The team has approximately 290 bikes at any one time. With riders keeping a training road and TT bike at home (usually the previous year's), the service course stores the current season's fleet of race bikes, along with around 250 sets of wheels and a huge selection of tyres. However, this is just the beginning…

They have bikes and wheels? Well that certainly is new... incredible

Fan Millar got writers block and rehashing old press releases.........

They forgot to mention the mood lighting? :( The mood lighting is key.

Hey...don't knock it. It makes for some entertaining reading on this Giro rest day.

This marginal gain book is too funny! Did Wiggo leave it behind?

David Walsh's personal copy from when he was embedded with them. Look how dog-eared that thing is.

A private room for the mechanics, where LRP's photo hangs over the bed for . . . inspiration.

That's like something Blackcat would make up in a post, but no, apparently it's real.

Sad.

Fantastic! But wait, this might be dangerous to some:

"Having done the body scans, Froome tucks into some fruit and sandwiches and strips for action, revealing a big, bloody wound on his knee. He smiles wryly. “I was taking my racing bike and my time-trial bike to wash them in the car wash.” It was around the corner from his apartment in Monaco; he was riding one bike and wheeling the other alongside when the handlebars became entangled. “Down I went, quite heavily.”

That is beautiful and loving ode to LRP with his favorite pet fluffy lion :) I wonder who gets to use this room for 15 minutes at a time? Maybe Walsh pops in for some inspiration for his next best seller?

re The inclusion of the LRP and Chasing Lance photos in the marginal gain photo gallery.

No one can accuse those who chronicle pro cycling of lacking a sense of humour.
That's funny stuff.

p.s. Where is blackcat? This is the precise time to introduce some blackcateandrollery.

Re: The Sky-Con-O-Meter. Predictions on how much more ridic

do you know riders share their race money with masseurs and mechanics too eh?
they work from 5 am until late after dinner. 2 yellow jerseys in Paris-Nice make a few $$$ courtesy of Richie
I dont think they mind to have him on a picture
but yes, I understand, a joke about LRP is fine

I am not a bike radar member nor surfer.
and I am right about the work of the guys behind the scenes, carers and mechanics, in every team, evil or good.

I was pointing how in the ******* pro-cycling environment they, maybe luckily, dont seem to look at things the way we do on these boards.

ps. Hog I hope you noticed how Voeckler compared Yorkshire to the Tour (as did Richie with TDU ;) )

Granted, LRP is a good looking guy, but I don't have pictures of my boss hanging over my bed.

I did! Thought it was hilarious! The UCI forces riders to compare shitty races to the Tour to keep everyone happy

Is cycling so primitive that riders and teams didn't know the benefits of cooling down after races before Sky showed up?

Since I was a 12 year old boy training in school that I have been told from the benefits of these practices... Guess it's one of the privileges of doing that hi-tech sport called Athletics.

No, but the tactics of lying are still in their infancy. See cadence, no nutella, nice pillows, etc. etc.
These guys need to step it up and present a better explanation why current riders are as good as those who were doped to the gill prior 2006.

I don't think it's sad. I think some mechanics genuinely look up to some of the riders as *cough* 'role models'.

I think it's sweet... ;)

Every shitty race I rode, we all rode back home from the race so we could warm down. It's been going on for years. Even when we had a car ride home we'd motor pace for a few miles heifer jumping in the car the rest of the way.

i'm here, that is one of the Amaury Sport sponsor Credit Lyonnais lion stuffie stuffed toy bears no?

now, at Tour of Cali when Cipo came back to ride for Mike Ball for a few races which I think only became Cali, Cipo inverted the hostess role when he took a few of the podium girls hostesses up to his 4 seasons for nocturnal hijinks and some fan had found Cipo's room number and he had knocked on the door and asked Cipo to sign a Credit Lyonnais stuffie for him, and Cipo took the sharpie and drew a set of genitals on the stuffed lyon, now, that may have been Cipo's version of foreplay, but I cant speak for him.

Now, with LRP having his own Credit Lyonnais lyon, I can see him doing a shortman syndrome vicarious thing and taking his texter/sharpie to the stuffed bear, and compensating for the L in the acronym LRP.

now, the version of Cipo and Cali and Rock Racing and the Credit Lyonnais lyon may well be apocryphal, on a part of the chinese whispers thing, I heard the whisper, and to concede that i engaged in a slight bit of artistic licence, it was not a Sino sleight whisper. sleight insofar as, some wildean drollery. nothing more. legit

I'd like to know what the character on the beadspread is. Is it one of those inspirational ones that's supposed to read "Road Warrior" but actually translates as "turtle flower"... you know, DB purchased them during the Beijing tour or olympics where the seller told him it meant whatever he wanted it to mean

If you really want to know, it means "good fortune" :D

why aren't sky doing lie-detector tests?
it seems easy enough to beat those tests or to simply pay off a polygrapher.
kittel got away with it and it brought him quite a bit of positive publicity and credibility.

Yes, you answered your own question. It would prove nothing.
Or, let me reverse it: them not doing polygraph tests means nothing. Because as you say, they can be easily fooled. They have nothing to be afraid of, whether they are truly innocent or not. So there is nothing stopping them from doing such a test hence them not doing one isn't suspicious (do you see my logic here?)
