there is no more need to explain the course since everyone saw it yesterday.
I dont know how it'll play out with less laps in the 2 loops but i imagine that make the flat even more important and the wind here today is REALLY strong. Rowing has been postponed... the costal road that connects the 2 loops is very exposed and WILL be windy both ways..
with lots of "little" teams i think(!?) there is very good chance of enchelons and breaks on the peloton...
Does Flavia have at least a outside chance of medal??

LS, how can you combine such comprehensive writing with leading a normal life? It's a treat for us, but I hope you don't sacrifice anything just to keep us informed!

btw the CRAZY wind today is against the peloton on their way to Grumari circuit and in favor on their way back to Canoas...
when this wind comes, SW, its REALLY strong and will help immensely if there is a break....

Bad weather in Rio today, heavy winds. Good for the teams with more engines, bad for the teams with fewer. Going to be a tough day in the saddle for those riding alone, especially those who have designs on potential medals such as Amialiusik and Neff, though the latter may pull out to rest for the MTB if it gets too troublesome. Favours the stronger engines, because lightweight climbers like Mara and Kasia getting blown about in the wind aren't going to be able to get to the base of the big climb as fresh as they'd like, which favours the more powerful riders and those who like bad weather such as Johansson and Armitstead. Still good for Anna VDB, she's not a featherweight but a more compact climber, strong TT engine and has some of the better protection around the flats. The USA are the team that might be concerned, as they haven't really got any rouleur bodyguards out there, Armstrong won't want to destroy herself with the TT coming up, and she's also 42 years old and has had comparatively little racing this year as against many of the others out there, but she's obviously a strong rider nonetheless; after that though they might be needing Evie Stevie and Megan to expend more energy than they'd like to early on. The Germans also with some really strong rouleurs are well suited to this, but if the pressure gets really high when the road goes skywards their best chance is Lichtenberg, who they'll need to protect as she's not suited to cobbles and echelons at all.

Nikki is kind of here ahead of the likes of Dani King because of her rapport with Lizzie too... would have been funny for Pooley's move to have been a bit more decisive, there would have been a real moment of catharsis pent up, a bit like that time after Michael Schumacher made his comeback when Rubens Barrichello took him to the sword.

Are we all in for Katarzyna Niewiadoma? :)

Niewiadoma, Lichtenberg, Pooley, Johansson, Moolman-Pasio, Stevens, Amialiusik, Ferrand-Prévot, Longo Borghini, Neff all riders I'd be happy to see win, but especially given that I think a Pooley victory is unlikely, Kasia and Claudia above all. There are a few others I'd be happy for too, but not ones I could consider particularly realistic due to either team role (eg Annemiek) or simply unlikeliness (eg Bagatelj).

And the racing has started

edit: A real shame that there isn't a strong break up ahead, but somewhat understandable with the wind and small teams.

In this kind of race it is pretty rare to see a strong break form in women's cycling anyhow, because if all the big teams have representation the lesser ones know it will be allowed to go and so chase manically, and if the big teams don't have a composition of break they're happy with they'll nuke it, so you often see constant attack-catch, attack-catch of people trying to form a group that can be allowed a bit more freedom; here none of the big nations consider Kopecky a threat, and with the small teams you could expect that only those in the less threatening teams would have been able to get any freedom.

Ha, just as I post that, Germany try to put Kasper up the road. That is a nice bit of work as it frees Brennauer, who loves bad weather, cobbles and gritty terrain, to protect Claudia and also not expend too much energy with the TT in mind. Just wonder who would be minded to take up the chase though as while it buys Germany the freedom not to work, Kasper's not much more of a threat to win than Kopecky...

^^Thanks. I must say that I found the lack of reaction when Kasper went as well surprising.

Meanwhile we are approaching the cobbles. Given they only do them twice, I guess we will see some teams forcing things here already :)

Surprised US didn't send someone up the road with Kasper.
Armstrong is the only one they could. Stevens and Guarnier would be pounced on in an instant and the move would be killed, and Abbott attacking in this weather on the flats and cobbles would only gain a gap if the rest of the péloton was paralyzed by shock.
