Pidock mentioned the same during last year's Tour, although blaming a heat stroke back then:

"My body hasn't been responding so well over the last four to five days. I’ve been holding a lot of water since I had heat stroke on stage 14 and I’m super-heavy now – almost 3kg heavier than when I started the race."

5kg has to be an exaggeration, but I believe "almost 3" which really means 2.5.

I think it suggests a lot of inflammation (from hard riding every day, an infection etc) in addition to other issues like wrong salt intake. I had a big bowl of really salty menudo a couple weeks ago and woke up "almost 3" kg heavier the next day than the previous morning.

I would have expected ineos to have tested riders' sweat rate and saltiness to customize their bottles.

If i remember, it was in particular Arensman's dad who behaved extremely salty. So this theory might prove to be correct.
 
Nevertheless, the interview with Arensman is very interesting. I love riders who are a bit too open and transparent for their own good.

Looks like his marriage with Ineos is an arduous one. Last year he had an off season (bar the Giro), this year the ramp up to the Giro looked better but he's not improving that 3-4 percent on his climbing performance to become a super consistent contender.

Pretty much this, maybe the hard training block was too near to the Giro after the TotA, so his recovery was worse and inflammation more of a problem than usual.
I assume teams would monitor salt intake as a basic metric in a gt, but we've seen bigger fails...

He didn't ride TotA iirc. I have heard 2 different (not necessarilly mutually exclusive) takes/stories. One was that he would be riding Romandie with the brakes on which was why the result was subpar. The other was that he wanted to ride Romandie instead of Alps so that he could have some real racedays closer before the Giro (possibly to address the problem he has in the first days of a GT?). You would think they accounted for the training blocks and how hard they needed to be when considering Romandie over Alps for those specific reasons.

I am curious to know about all the nutritional trends, so if you are jamming in over a 100 grams of carbs per hour and it looks like they are using 2 formats, gels and bottles. I wonder how many kilograms of liquid is consumed in a @4 hour stage? And in boxing, MMA or wrestling dropping weight for a weigh in is a thing, wonder what the pre and post race weight for someone like Pogocar. And w all the reports about massive carb consumption, I look on in horror as guys use a bottle for on the head, face,down your back, for cool down, I keep thinking that it's a @30% concentrated sugar water!!
