So Ala got his revenge against VdP. The latter had so much more speed at the end but clearly went too late (and was too far back) and understandably hit his handlebar in anger. WVA in the 3rd place. How can you beat the Big3? Pogi was 4th so it's almost like a victory there!

People here are underestimating the amount of energy it takes not only to fight for position, but also to do so at high speed uphill. Had van der Poel moved up sooner, he might well have burned even more energy and done a worse sprint. These long drags aren't necessarily in his favor.
Maybe, but by looking at the sprint I want to say that had he stay on Ala's wheel he would have won IMHO!

He'd have been fine. You could see he was kind of boxed in for awhile.

Yeah, but he really doesn't seem to care much about being at the front. Maybe it helps him a lot to look more at what he feels is the right tempo for him, instead of just hanging on to someone elses tempo all the time ((or maybe he's just a bit inexperienced...or maybe he has the confidence)).

Van der Poel positioning was questionable throughout the last 30 km, not just in the final.
He has tendency to slide back and then move up again from the sides, whereas both WVA and Alaphilippe almost never left the first 10 positions in those last 30 km. Of course having a stronger team would help, but he's also to blame. Not every race can be won by being brutally stronger than the competition.

Him having some weakness (not mountain) is actually good for the sport.

Also, looking at the GC, I think we might be in for a legendary stage 5, especially if WVA is still in the lead (or virtual lead considering the ITT).
I agree. This could be a really good stage and edition of TA. Potentially. And I hope Eolo could finish in a podium of stage.
