Indeed. Mathieu got his initial gap thanks to Jorgenson, but del Toro gapped Mathieu because of nearly eating *** himself.

One day races are different than stage races, when you are competing against someone for the win who is also there for GC. Changes everything, as we saw today.

He's clearly not training for Strade so why is it a deal? He may feel like PR is at risk and that is his priority; not setting up someone else to win at Strade and sacrifice a section of his season. Today was a training day and he won the stage. He won. Pog and Wout aren't in this race.

Hindley lost almost a full minute. I guess that's it for the Red Bull trident, and instead it's probably gonna have to be Hindley on donkey duty and Roglic on long range attacks given that he's not really in stomping range and Del Toro is like 4x resistant versus stomp-type attacks.

If strength isn't the issue (and that will always be an issue against MVDP), positioning when things get dicy is what he's lost. When there's a fight for position, he pulls the ripcord, and gets out of danger.

MVDP had a gap on Del Toro thanks to the crash and Del Toro still caught him.
MVDP wasn't too impressive. That means nothing for Cipressaa and Poggio though.

He was about as good as could be expected. He doesn't like climbing sections that are longer than a few hundred meters. Cipressa and Poggio work for him because there are no steep gradients.

Yeah, MVP did well: more or less like I expected (but I thought Del Toro would edge it). I also think Pogacar was more or less as good as expected in Strade. Obviously MVP will be very hard to drop on Cipressa and Poggio but it's nothing new: after the CX season we expected him to be very strong.

I think most will he happy with an easy stage leading to a big bunch sprint. Alpecin still has Philipsen to go for it in that case, while van der Poel likely wouldn't beat someone like Lund anyway. Visma could be interested, but probably not alone on a 220k stage.

Congratulations to Mathieu van der Poel for winning the stage.

For viewers it was spectacular but in term of riders this stage was asking for it, for crashes and injuries to occur, the toll luckily wasn't as huge as anticipated. I feel that RBH managed to get positioning right, entering on the gravel section, then it was every man for himself, on where Giulio managed to stay closer in terms of contesting the stage and Rogla managed to mitigate the losses to great extent. Position for Rogla is less ideal, then yesterday, still considering RBH has two riders in reach, on where UAE is now down to del Toro, they can play games and have fun.

It seems that Rogla has developed a habit of pushing youngsters ahead, Lipo, Giulio ... guiding star. Still, at some point it makes sense to put the hammer down. Deeper into the race i feel it makes sense to crack the opposition and to go after the win, not just the podium.
