uran was in the attack the whole day and still managed to hang on that long in the third week at age 22, in his first ever gt. but it seems your memory isn't much or you didn't watch it at all
Seems you have somehow low standards.

Seems to me your thesis on Rigo's great last week of the 2009 Tour is a little bit of a BS thesis.

we are not talkinmg about consistancy here. nibali is one of the most consistant riders in the world, but not one of the best climbers
You must be right, Nibali's placings in GT's were all thanks to his incredible TT achievements.

You just have no arguments to support this. I'm going to give you one, just one reason why he's one of the top-10 climbers (being conservative here) in the world right now. 3rd on 2012 TdF with an injury at the end behind 2 ITT specialists. I'm not talking about one-day climbers, I'm talking about a 3-week GC climbers.

how is being third in the tour mean you are one of the 10 best climbers? purito, rujano, contador, samu and many others were absent and the course was barely mountainous. I'm not talking about top ten gc riders, but climbers and nibali isn't

Tweet from Acquarone regarding this stage:

http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/phinney-time-cut-as-tirreno-adriatico-gruppetto-quits

Doubt we'll this type of stage again based on that tweet.

There wouldn't have been anywhere near as many abandons as there were, had there not been circuits. When you're out the back, and you've still got another brutal circuit to go but you can see the bus, it's a lot harder to carry on than if you had say 40km to go and the bus was...40km away.

Also the fact that it was the last road race stage. Lots of the riders would also have abandoned on an easier route (with rain).

Do people consider Evans to be a top climber? I've always thought he endures a climb rather than destroys it

He's getting old now, but what he did on the Galibier was very impressive. So impressive that I rate him way higher than Nibali in terms of climbing.

and it had 95% to do with the weather. if it was an easy circuit stage today in the rain, everyone abandoned as well who wouldn't have itt aspirations

Yes, that broke the back of the tour for him. Before that he was regarded as a wheelsucker, enduring the climbs, limiting the damage. I suppose it's difficult to compare the two directly now as they are at different stages of their career.

Glad no-one is championing Wiggins: definitely class him as a wheelsucker

Equally if they'd had a sunny day and light breeze you'd have seen a lot less abandoned.

I think many of us just define "best climbers" differently.

You can't be considered one of the best climbers in the world without at least a certain level of consistency in my opinion. If I'm coming up with a list of the top climbers, I'm naming guys who have shown an ability to be at or near the top time and time again. I'm not going to include guys who have shown something once or twice in their career but most of the time are just not there.

neither do I. I can post many more results from the guys in my list, than once or twice

RODRIGUEZ OLIVER Joaquím "Purito"
CONTADOR VELASCO Alberto
RUJANO GUILLÉN José Humberto "Cara de Niño"
ANTON HERNANDEZ Igor
EVANS Cadel
SANCHEZ GONZALEZ Samuel “Samu”
POZZOVIVO Domenico
FROOME Chris
COBO ACEBO Juan Jose
SCARPONI Michele
QUINTANA ROJAS Nairo Alexander
ROLLAND Pierre
HENAO MONTOYA Sergio Luis "El Venao"
VALVERDE BELMONTE Alejandro

RUJANO GUILLÉN José Humberto "Cara de Niño": he had one good result in the last 7 years. He's obviously inferior to Nibali.

ANTON HERNANDEZ Igor: has been extremely mediocre since 2010. Nibali has been the better climber for the last 3 years. Simple as...

EVANS Cadel: He's not a better climber anymore. He's too old. Nibali has performed consistently better than Evans since his Tour win in 2011. He's also much younger.

SANCHEZ GONZALEZ Samuel “Samu”: Nibali is also better than Samu nowadays, he's getting old. Nibali has also proven a lot more already than Samu did when he was as old as Nibali is now. Nibali will only get better, Samu will slowly get worse.

POZZOVIVO Domenico: Uhh... Nibali has obviously been the better climber since 2010 at least.

COBO ACEBO Juan Jose: He had one good performance in 6 years. Nibali is obviously better than him.

SCARPONI Michele: You mean the guy who started climbing better after his doping ban and actually visited Ferarri after his ban? Lol, Nibali has been better last 3 years anyway.

QUINTANA ROJAS Nairo Alexander: Lol, he couldn't even beat Richie Porte in Paris-Nice. Nibali won T-A against Froome, Contador and Rodriguez. He's still young though, so it isn't really a fair comparison.

ROLLAND Pierre: Are you kidding me? He's only good in the Tour and LBL. And he's not even that good during the Tour.

HENAO MONTOYA Sergio Luis "El Venao": didn't impress me in the Giro last year. Nibali is better.

VALVERDE BELMONTE Alejandro: Will be interesting to see how Nibali climbs against Valverde. Maybe we'll be able to decide who's better after this season.
