I'm curious, as I was never tested as a master....did they do the full protocol....pull up jersey, shorts down and watch you go? And then seal up 2 bottles with melted wax over the caps? That is what they used to do back the last time I was tested...jeez 45 years ago at least....imagine it has changed a bit since then!

It was 30+ years ago but, yes. Same deal. Never tested at Masters although in my last few years there was more testing; particularly at Bend, Oregon. That's where they caught the WC guy from North Carolina. Think he had a long list of regional competitors urging that testing.

I misread, thought you were tested as an old guy, not when we were kids. Between the pee and the blood must be pretty intrusive. Plus all that 24 hr reporting stuff they have to do for the where abouts. Seems like a pretty high price to pay for the riders, especially when we start hearing the stories on the doping agencies with stuff like the Chinese swimmers, etc.

But it's all working out and cleaning things up right?? LOL

When the sponsor found out he made them pack the crew with just their riders and they rode 3 seconds slower while I watched. Only reason I could figure I was tested was because I was not one of their squad. If I failed the sponsor could shrug it off. Never had another tour of the white room after that.

A little "multicultural clarification":

Often times, in America, we refer to masters riders as "Masters Fatties". Even the fittest of masters riders often get a bit "fat" someplace. Look at Thurlow, his head is HUGE now. And he's a WORLD champion.

I have known him for years, raced against him.
He can be 100 years old, he is dedicated, and has a level of intensity many current pros and elite racers would die for. Guy is a great example of getting something from racing. Rogers has been a great racer at one level or another for 40+ years. Guy is genuine and generous,he has helped countless people, myself included. To include him as a reference point in fatty, doper anything negative is either envy, education or.. He's 64 years old and still racing, still achieving goals, still helping people.. I hope I can race half as well when I am 64!!!

Yep, very impressive to be so good for so long and balance out a career and family. Most of us can go for a few years and then something has to give. I don't recall what he did for a career or his family stuff.

Granny is juiced! Tested positive for the anabolic steroid oxandrolone (Anavar) at this year's Masters outdoor championships. No.1 ranked in the world in the 50m, 60m & 100m in 2023.

Apparently oxandrolone can be used to treat bone pain caused by osteoporosis, so maybe granny can use that as an excuse for doping without having to get too creative.

It's the lowest androgenic oral compound available & therefore doesn't cause many of the masculine side-effects seen with other steroids & testosterone (facial hair, voice changes, aggressiveness, etc).

The other thing here is that if she wasn't prescribed the oxandrolone for osteoporosis & was flat out doping, then this is very embarrassing for her. There are human interest stories over the years about her. Stuff like how she's such a good grandparent (40 grandchildren & 5 great grandchildren), how she's able to train so hard despite having Crohn's disease, and so forth. I didn't mean to suggest she actually has osteoporosis because I don't know, but if she did and at her age it would be more than understandable if she had gotten a TUE for oxandrolone. That's if they would let her race while she's on it, I don't know the specifics of how TUEs work and at which point they just say nope, you can't be on this and compete at the same time.

I'm not sure how TUEs work for post-menopausal women. I believe if they're using HRT they would need a TUE. On the men's side a TUE can be granted for testosterone replacement therapy if the athlete has been legitimately diagnosed with hypogonadism by a board-certified doctor (the American Urological Association defines a male as hypogonadal with testosterone levels below 300 ng/dL).

However, the testosterone levels can only be brought up to what is normal for their age. No TUE can be granted to these masters athletes using TRT for just "low T symptoms." These are the guys that have normal testosterone levels for their age but are using TRT through a "low T center" with intentions of boosting their testosterone levels much higher than what is normal for their age. Lol.

Tradtional women's HRT is not banned (estradiol and progesterone). However some women also take testosterone off license and that would require a TUE which I don't think women would be able to get. They don't measure hormone levels to prescribe HRT (pointless because they fluctuate so much in perimenopause anyway, as they do during pre-menopausal life) but they do look at women's T levels before prescribing that. Also (in the UK anyway) you can't get testosterone prescribed without already having been on HRT for some time.

70 is quite old to be taking androgens to manage post-menopausal symptoms though, given she would have gone through menopause at least 10 if not 20 years earlier. Most women that age haven't been on HRT for 20 years and also testosterone for menopause is a relatively recent thing iirc.

Interestingly, voxandrolone is also apparently used to manage muscle loss in those who have prolonged used of corticosteroids. If at 70 if there's lots of muscle and bone loss, that says to me the user has not been on HRT since menopause. I really doubt a TUE could be given for this. Basically, if you're a woman and you have a medical need for anabolic steroids, you do not compete.

Have you watched a serious televised Crossfit competition? I've watched a few and it's clear the Juice is strong with these ones. The body tells are all there. Sure there must be a clean champion among them but it's like MMA, triathalon, tennis, etc. Too much personal pressure to go the next step and no one watching.

My understanding at the time was that he was couch surfing down in San Diego somewhere. He must have had lots of friends. So all in all I don't think there was balance in his life. Still impressive as an old man racer but not worth glazing. I did like racing with him because he never played the age card. (I'm 30 years younger)

Yep, remember some scuttle butt along those lines.....no judgement, but sometimes the kool aid tastes pretty damn good.

Let's be real, just look at how the women at the crossfit games are built. Hard to get that look without steroids and they aren't pro bodybuilders who just train for looks.
Crossfit is probably as bad as grappling/bjj where the top events have minimal drug testing, if any at all. A rampant steroid culture.

I always default to gymnasts as being the prime example of fittest. Granted, 4'11" women weighing 110 lbs aren't going to drag a bus as a fitness challenge but the sheer endurance and strength, pound for pound is beyond any crossfitter. Let alone other sports.

Yeah, but the “pound for pound” thing is the problem. Favors small stature, very young (prepubescent), and starvation diets. Smaller mass means more rotations. I don’t ever think of female gymnasts as healthy.

The demands on stature are now supplemented by the need for strength to be competitive and durable. Simone Biles is 4'8" and weighs between 104-110lbs. That's healthy weight. Suni Lee is 5' and heavier; neither look as starved down as half the pro peloton so those top flight Olympians seem past the anorexic trend based on those metrics.

I think the sort of manipulation you mention is already on display in one country's team. It takes a pretty tight socio-political situation to pull that off and explain things to your country. It helps if that's a totalitarian situation. That's tougher to do with social networks looking into everything.
As I suggested earlier, parents willing to do anything to get their progeny into the big time are everywhere so there's that situation that has existed seemingly as long as there are drugs to give them. Doping juniors isn't uncommon and a truly selfish parent wouldn't stop there if history tells us anything.

The UCI provisionally suspended a 41-year-old American amateur cyclist after he tested positive for unspecified anabolic androgenic steroids at the UCI Gran Fondo World Time Trial Championship in Australia.
The UCI said Matthew Clark of North Salt Lake City, Utah, returned the positive sample in an anti-doping control on October 16, 2025, the same day he won the men’s 40–44 age group world championship.

Clark also won the U.S. national road title this summer in the same category.
