No he didn't. Completely legit sprint, Boonen just ****ed up. He should've got on Gilbert's wheel as soon as he passed him.

You can clearly see him swerve. Boonen wants to come around him, Bozic blocks him causing Boonen to pauze briefly, which was enough for Gilbert to win. Boonen trashed a camper after that race because he was so furious with Bozic.

To me it looks like Boonen only has himself to blame. He really shouldn't rely on Bozic and seemed like Gilbert simply was stronger there. I can't see how he got screwed?

I know and it doesn't matter. Boonen should still have been on his wheel. Worst thing that could happen would be for Gilbert to slow down and Boonen would have to win the sprint from a low speed being in the 2nd position.

When you are clearly better (in this case, sprinter than Bozic) you should never make yourself dependent on the other rider when you don't have to. Boonen failed.

I agree Bozic was the reason Boonen didn't win that Paris-Tours, but it was because Bozic was totally empty, not because of him swerving.

If you think Bozic should be disqualified for that, you don't understand cycling at all or you're a Boonen fanboy.

Still, results like today show that there's a light that hasn't yet gone out: as long as Boonen rides I'll cheer for him to get Het Volk (it's kind of classy that he has never won that, a bit like Merckx and Paris-Tours), San Remo (I'll root for a bunch sprint if Tommeke wins while pretending to lead out Gaviria), Paris-Tours (come on it's a freacking classic, just go and get it) and obviously a record breaking win in Paris-Roubaix just to add to his legendary God-like status in the cobblestones.

Boonen hasn't survived the Poggio/Cipressa in years, I wouldn't get your hopes up.

A crash took him out in '12 on the Poggio descent, iirc. Decent chance that if things had gone right (the added QS power to the chase would have made it a bunch sprint) he could have won it that year.

Had no problem beating those in a sprint a week later.

Friday he rides Dwars door het Hageland, a race with cobbles and gravel roads. It's live on VTM. Pippo Pozzato is riding as well, hopefully we see an epic duel, even if it's just a small race. The small races often have the best racing. Wout van Aert will also be a dangerous opponent on this route, as it favors cyclocrossers.

Niels Albert and Nick Nuyens are the creators of the new route.
