He can definitely win this. Less abrupt transformation than Froome, much more talent but nevertheless a huge surprise.

Lot more similar to Wiggins than to Froome in that respect.

Not really, Wiggins was a pure TT specialist on the road before his transformation. Dumoulin was always very allround and became harder, better, faster and stronger every season the last few years. Now hes progressing to the next step, be it a big one.

What a rider. To me, today he clearly established himself as the greatest rider on the planet right now. No one comes close at being so ggod at so different categories of cycling. Honestly i thought riders klike him have died out. A real oldschool rolleur that can aslo climb. I really hope that there will be classical GT parcours soon again, if so, Tom has a seroius shot at winning them.
He has superstar potential. Surely the most exciting rider in a long way. Can`t wait to see his further development.

Agree with pretty much everything.

Can't wait for the ITT now.

What a superstar he's been so far this Vuelta. That stage where he came back past Froome was the best GT stage this year by miles... Then today, what a defence. Awesome effort.

Without team and with any assistance from other GC riders. Dropping Quintana and Valverde
He should seriously concentrate on GC

He just have to pace himself on the climbs instead of responding to all of the attacks, then he has this one in the bag. Losing 20 seconds or so on each of the 3 mountain stages would not do any harm to his overall ambitions.

He will gain at least 3 minutes on every rival in the time trial.

Not gonna happen.

Aru is gonna take significantly more time than that

Aru has to take A LOT of time before the TT. He needs to attack on every mountain stage. And he needs Landa to be by his side. Dumoulin should be able to gain at least 3 minutes on Aru in the TT.

3 minutes? I'm not that convinced.
It's after 2.5 weeks of racing and usually the real GT riders do well in such TT's. Aru isn't the worst timetrialist ever as well. He should try to keep them within 2 minutes atleast.

Giro d'Italia - CRONO Treviso-Valdobbiadene (59,4 km)
1 - Vasil Kiryienka, 1.17'52
3 - Alberto Contador 1.18'06
29 - Fabio Aru 1.20'53 + 2'47" by Alberto Contador
Dumoulin more than 4 mins to Aru in less km??

Come on man!

Who talked about 4 minutes ? I think that it could come down to around 2 minutes.

Based on yesterday's stage one has to wonder whether Aru will put much time into Dumoulin before the ITT though...

This one is flatter. And Dumoulin is the second best time trialist in the peloton. Only Martin is better. 4 minutes is more than possible.

Aru will not lose 4 minutes. This time trial is not that long.

That said, I was completely wrong about Tom D. I thought he would lose at least 2 more minutes to Majka, Aru, Chaves et al today.

I expect Aru to lose 2-2,5 minutes in the TT. The TT is in the third week and Aru is not that bad of a time trialist amongst GC guys. It looks like he's improved lately. His flat TT in Poland was pretty good.

I just think that the stage to Ermita di Alba is actually harder for Dumoulin because the stage is longer, climbs are steeper and it's really up and down all day. They can really attack him on the Cobertoria already and if he's dropped there he'll lose 2 minutes already most likely

I'd say that as well: The Andorra-stage was insane, but I reckon Alba will be harder since its longer, in stage 16 after two consecutive mountains and with Cobertoria in the absolute final. The fireworks will start in the bottom at that climb, im almost positive.

I say Aru losses 2-2.30 minutes, 3 at the very best. He is the favorite for me. 70%-30% between these two.

For me, Aru is a 98% favourite over Dumoulin

You would expect so. But Aru also has shown frailty in the middle of a GT. See his bad days in the Giro.'

For me Rodriguez is the favorite, even with the ITT

Yep, I just wanted to say it. Don't forget Purito. I expect Aru to lose time in some stages.
