back on the bike 2 weeks after Catalunya crash. Could he have saved his ardennes? He won't be in top form which makes me doubt his ability to get a win.
Didn't see this coming. Riding the Tour of the Alps this week. In prep for LBL.

Probably the only way he can regain some form ahead of Sunday. Worked for Ciccone (I think?!?)

makes sense when he cant compete in the classics after his injury and just wants some racing in before the july prep
I would think it's more of a last attempt to get back on track before Liege.

But yeah, if he had any kind of shape already he'd obviously do the classics instead of TotA.

i could imagine that his explosive punch would be most affected and that because of that he doesnt think he stands a chance in fleche . but then its just also very difficult for me to imagine anything better than an anonymous top20 in liege as the best case

its literally detailed on his instagram, assuming this share works

but basically summary is

bruising on the tibia and fibula, stress fractures inside the bone
suspected ALL injury front outer side of the knee, pulled a bit of bone off where the ligament attaches
grade 2 MCL on the inner side of the knee
sprain ofthe LCL on the outer side of the knee
fluid swelling on the knee joint
Tom's an exciting rider in my opinion, so I'm glad to see him back in the bunch, specially winning. Chapeau!

Stunning comeback from these injuries less than a month ago. Did they get it wrong on the initial scans or is this just how a world class athlete with the best trainers and doctors can recover (no clinic innuendo intended).

no Id imagine the scans were spot on, and really all thats happened since is the swelling and the bruising have gone done. the MCL only needs about 4weeks to recover, doesnt require surgery. Remember Lindsey Vonn went skiing without a ruptured ACL and bone bruising, this was only a partial tear, Im sure Tom has just been doing strength exercises on the knee, and theyll obviously look for any reaction from sustained activity.

and some of those injuries could be "wear and tear" for any pro athlete, not caused by the crash necessarily, especially the stress fractures, Im sure if you got most of us scanned like that we'd have all manner of scary bits of us that we didnt know werent quite where they should be anymore :)

but yeah good to see him back & winning a stage.
