My list:

Miguel Induraín
Alberto Contador
Federico Bahamontes
Perico Delgado
Luis Ocaña (maybe at the same perico's level )
Carlos Sastre
Roberto Heras (I doubt with Sastre and Heras)
Joseba beloki
Abraham Olano
Alejandro Valverde

any other suggestion?

What on earth is this?

You put Beloki, whose biggest win is a freaking Volta a Catalunya, higher than World and Vuelta champion Olano and don't even mention three-time World Champion Freire?? And what about Fuente?

1- Indurain
2- Contador
3- Freire
4- Ocaña
5- Bahamontes
6- Delgado
7- Fuente
8- Olano
9- Sastre
10- Valverde

Yeah I left out Heras. Deal with it.

Green Jersey = Worlds ??? Is that serious ????
LOOOOL :D:D:D:D
LOOOOL

I don't think I've laughed as much since the doctor fell down the stairs. Holy Moses! Do Anglos really know anything at cycling? Pffeeew !!! That's a good one, really.

By the way, my bad Fiammingo, I've slightly overrated van der Poel's Amstel win, Criq's second place at Amstel, and Boogerd's Catalan Weeks wins. Even Roche is overrated.

So Freire is ahead of van der Poel, Criquielion and LeMond are tied (not the result I expected but that's it), Boogerd is still ahead of Evans but by a slight margin.

After the joke list posted a few days ago regarding top riders of all time, here is a more sensible one.

http://www.cyclinghalloffame.com/riders/alltime100.asp

Who the hell drew that up? Never heard of a classic, I take it? All over the list you have all-time greats of the classics far behind mediocre grand tour riders.

Kelly 11th
De Vlaeminck 16th
Boonen 35th (seriously, how are Zabel and Rominger ahead of him?)
Argentin 61st
Cancellara 91st (apparently deserves to go after such luminaries as Zulle and Baby Schleck)

EDIT: seems I was not the first to notice this.

Yeah you're right the list isnt that great. But it had the luxury of being based on some sort of system and not just awarding points based on whether the organizer likes the riders or not - which was what i was trying to illustrate my disaproval of.

And to be fair its not surprising to see Zabel higher than Boonen on a points system. On cq he was top 3 for 5 consecutive years during which his lowest score was 1949.
Even though it only began 7 years into his career he still scored in 10 years of cq nearly 2000 more points than Boonen has in his entire career (13 years/ or 11 if you want to start on his first Roubaix podium)

of YOUR country

The original poster asked the question , to list the top 10 best cyclists from Your country of all time.
You guys are creating lists and arguing all cyclists of all time and that wasn't the question.
If you are not from a cycling nation but love cycling just pick a country or club from a country and research that or just have fun with it .
Old guys like us know these lists are like collecting Hockey players cards found in bubble gum collectors cards for kids .
In the end its pointless . How ironic , a point system that is pointless .

All time would be difficult for me, since I haven't seen Coppi, Bartali, Binda, Gimondi etc.. so I will consider only riders from 90s.

1 Pantani
2 Bugno
3 Bettini
4 Cipollini
5 Simoni
6 Basso
7 Nibali
8 Bartoli
9 Rebellin
10 Chiappucci

do you agree?

This list was formulated some time ago, by a yank, with the sole objective of getting Armstrong as high up in the pantheon as possible. It's very biased towards the tour. Check out this for a seriously well researched and thought out list of the all time great. http://thevirtualmusette.com/

Not sure how you can put DeVlaeminck above Kelly. Similar Palmares but while DeVlaeminck has two more monuments than Kelly and more semi-classics, Kelly has
4 Green jerseys
7 Paris-Nice
1 Grand Tour
1 TT World champion
And countless other stage race victories.

DeVlaeminck is one of my all time Favorites but there's no way he's ahead of Kelly. (let alone Anquetil or Coppi)

Thank you this more respectful criticism (compared to the previous ones).

I would say it all depends on the system. I, myself was rather surprised by many results. But you can easily fiddle with it and make one rider pass the other.

I'd just say that the point classifications in GT's do not count for me. The reason being that I already count stage wins and I didn't want to give twice a reward for the same performance.

With regards to Coppi, he's penalized by his era. I had to downgrade the Italian races up until the 50's, approximately. They were an all-Italian affair, with a depleted field.

Kelly, TT World champion? When?

This is what I have for both these riders:

While most scoring systems used in rating riders like this tend to oversell the GTs, I think by rating Paris-Nice the same as the Vuelta and by rating the Classics higher as well (plus with Paris-Nice giving 9 points and País Vasco only 2, the same as the Giro del Friuli or Overijse) you're overcompensating the other way.

Also, because points go for rankings, then somebody who got a number of placements without ever really threatening a win over several years could easily wind up rating higher than somebody like a José Manuel Fuente who shone really brightly but whose peak was pretty short. Your ranking gives too much reward for the guys who make up the bunch coming in behind the solo winner or winner's group. I appreciate you love yourself some Classic one-day racing, but coming 4th in the Trofeo Laigueglia or 9th in Züri-Metzgete should not be giving as many points as 2nd in Amstel Gold or 2nd in the Volta a Catalunya, at least back then.

Also, until recently with the UCI points system, placements were pretty irrelevant, especially in one-day races, so there were few people who would ride for the 9th and 10th places that get them some nice bags of points for this ranking. It also prejudices the list in favour of longevity, so a guy like Joop Zoetemelk, legendary though he was, is liable to be elevated simply because he was around long enough to accumulate a larger palmarès than many.

I'm rating the modern Vuelta (1990 onwards) and Amstel (2003 onwards) much higher.
At that time, Paris-Nice had a way better field, despite being just one week. The Paris-Nice palmares is quite huge. Amstel was not considered a true classic back then, despite the hard course.

Such rankings should always be evolutive. The major current races, were not necessarily the same as 50 years ago and won't necesarily be the same as in 50 years time.

And for hell's sake, on most rankings I know, Fuente and Herrera are far behind Agostinho, so ... all right ...

Tough to make a 10 for Scotland but the top 5 will be recognised:

Robert Millar:)
David Millar
Graeme Obree
Chris Hoy
Brian Smith

Other guys worth a mention who rode the Tour are Billy Bilsland and Ken Laidlaw although I have to admit I know nothing about them except that Bilsland was a mentor of sorts for Robert.

Of course, Armstrong and Hamilton both have Scottish roots;)

Pleased that Armstrong has Scottish roots, I thought with his name his roots might of been from the North East of England, this has come as a great releif :)

I assume you've downgraded the crappy post-Zabel version of Milan-San Remo then? ;)
