My guess is he couldn't. If he felt good he would have countered Valverde as well.

Also Froome's actions yesterday might end up biting him in the ass. Nibali would be a logical ally in the descent, as he'd be fighting for a podium place, but after yesterday I doubt Nibali will help Froome at any point.
