I think some of you guys have poor memory.

Even in the days of Armstrong and Pantani, most Tour stages were "boring", with Motorola (or whatever) sitting at the front of the peloton riding tempo until the last mountain.

The Tour has always been this way, especially in week 1, when nobody wants to risk too much.

But with US Postal you could be sure they were shredding the field before the finish of the race, often LA would attack at the bottom of the final climb.

Is the government paying for the Tour? If not, feels somewhat odd to have the PM visiting the race (yeah, I know, he is probably tested more often than the riders)

Never said they are all at their limit ?

They are all under orders to only do something when it will count

So what do people suggest?

Quintana and Landa head off up the road ...where by JV chase then down and they leave it out there and are knackered tomorrow and arent able to follow and lose the Tour ? This is the problem with a very strong team

Cycling is as much like chess as it is like snakes and ladders

No... I did not expect Quintana and Landa to attack at the first climb... but some teams may profit from a hard race in comparison to others. But it looks like nobody knows where they stand. Then there are some climbers who might want a stage win - but nobody seems very interested in that. The first week will soon be over. Of course there are still many stages coming... but some of them are flat and the big ones will be contested by Roglic, Bernal, Pinot, Quintana and most will not win against these riders.
But of course the individual rider/ team has reasons to not go hard here, I understand that.

It seems everyone has become a purito in the last few years.

I never liked TTs but more and more I am beginning to Understand why you need one early to split the GC

That's an insult to Purito

He often launched long range attacks. On that giro stage when Conta and Nibali were attacking far from the finish, it was Purito who actually attacked halfway up the Giau. He also attacked on the Finestre that year

I think it's quite fair considering attacking too late too often is the sole reason he never won a Grand Tour. Even the 2012 Vuelta he waited until the final 200m to drop Contador when he could've done so earlier a few times.

I don't think anyone is expecting these guys to be riding at 100% day after day. I'd take 80% though. Bar yesterday, this has been a group ride.
