Carapaz did beat Roglic and Nibali and won the Giro fair and square. Whether it is due to being the better climber or being tactically astute doesn't really matter. Pinot on the other hand has one Grand Tour podium in 12 starts to his name, and that was six years ago.
Yeah and I remember when people said Thomas couldn't possibly win the 2018 Tour cause he had never finished a gt in the top ten. Things are not that simple. Pinot would have two gt podiums in the last two seasons alone if not for a sudden sickness on the penultimate giro stage in 2018 and a freak injury in the last week of the tour 2019. Saying he has only one gt podium is factually correct but it gives you a very distorted picture.

Also, nobody is saying Carapaz didn't win the giro fair and square, people are just comparing him to Pinot, and for that context like "was he gifted time by his opponents" or "was he actually the strongest climber" absolutely do matter.

I will never claim something about having a better shot at dating ScarJo again.

Lol, what? You're joking, right?

Castroviejo (whose best GT GC result is 24th) was able to be with the best ten on one stage in the Tour de l'Ain but nowhere else, and now he should be a back-up for Bernal instead of a defending GT winner?

Well of course as he's done domestique duties but enginewise Castro is ahead of Carapaz from GC capasity point of view. When they let him ride free, he is very good.

my guess is that bernal will need 1.5 mins on dumo and roglic before the final ITT.

pinot would likely need 2 mins.

and that is just to stand a chance (depending, of course on what state of "exhaustion" they get there).

TTs that have climbs in them (as long as it is not crazy gradients) usually provide an opportunity for power riders to make an even greater difference. hinault destroyed zoetemelk by over 3 mins on the Avoriaz ITT in 1979, though one could argue zoetemelk was the better climber... and take rohan dennis's domination on Zwift's Alpe race... all steady power.
I'm not so sure that Bernal would do better than Pinot in the TT. Pinot put nearly a minute into Bernal in last year's TT, and he typically does very well on PDBF.

I would like to see Trentin and Colbrelli taking aim at the green jersey, its time for someone to give Sagan a proper challenge.

Also remember that Pinot lives very close to the PDBF. Hopefully he will go nuts on that one with his family and fans around!

From what we have seen over this season and last is that Bernal is roughly the same as Rogalic and Pinot in the mountains.

I think the only truly blow everyone out of the water climber in this year's TdF is Nairoman

Landani, too, surely.

If Nairo and Landa were to somehow find themselves off the front together, they might actually work together better than they ever did at Movistar...

Bernal needs more than just 90 seconds to stand a chance, IMO. He's done some good TTs, but on average he's not that good a TTer. I agree with your overall point, though.

This is likely a 55min+ effort for the winner, too. Gaps wil be pretty big, I think.
