I would favour scrapping pure flat sprint stages where a bunch gallop is the only outcome 199/200 times. There are far too many in this years race which should in theory have reduced the chaos yesterday due to there being so many further chances for the fast men to win but they live for today not the prospect of tomorrow.

Neutralising the times any more than 5km out dilutes the principle of getting from A-B every day in touch with the leaders.

Admittedly yesterday there was no good reason why riders that had lost minutes in the opening 2 days and are just stage hunting or going for the Mountains jersey later in the race couldn't have dropped off and formed an energy saving grupetto 20km out and rolled in 15 minutes down . This would have likely covered 25% of the field.

I don't know in which form Wout is, if after his surgery and pause he really doesn't have the legs to hang on in the mountains and he already knows it, then it really makes no sense to spare him the work for Roglic. However, at his best, he has a chance for a podium himself.
