People have to stop assigning in hindsight to Jumbo or in that matter any other team some kind of omnscient control over circumstances. Teams adapt.

My theory is that mvdp was pushing the pace just to make it harder for jakobsen et al to finish inside the time limit. It sort of worked, the breakaway picked up the pace.
