i find this TdF so far they racing with basically no commonsense or any clear plan at all. This stage suppose to be for break to form well long ago and any GC battle should happen later

I meant intermediate points. 20km to go with a long descent.
probably a bit of both. He might as well be in front to help if they can bridge the gap later, and he might as well get those points and get 2nd in the points classification in Paris.

edit: it's also one of those things where Lidl-Trek needs a guy in the break and Mads at that moment was the guy who had the tools to get there.

Oh, of course he will take it when they get to it, but he's not riding for green anymore - it's more a question of taking points when they are easily available, just in case Philipsen exits the Tour.

Can somebody please explain Kelderman? I've seem him doing GCs for 10 years and never attack to get time. But suddenly he's a gregario on the leading team in the Tour de france, his job is to control a start line this, and he's doing meme attacks?

I think both Jumbo and UAE came into this stage with a plan to get in the break, to force the other team to work all day today, ahead of the 3 GC stages.

But as Tyson said: "Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth"

They might let a group go tomorrow, but race even harder in the Alps on Saturday and probably even Sunday.

No problem to race this stage like a classic then! :D
It's an interesting choice to climb the Colombier on Le Quatorze Juillet. Maybe the organizers thought Pinot would be up for it?
