In his final Tour Bardet takes his first yellow jersey. When he attacked, I thought "nice", but I didn't give him much chance to win against a group with all those big budget teams. VDB3 did incredible work and they did what seemed impossible. It's always good to see team spirit and a brave attitude rewarded. I bet there will be festivities in France this evening!

Has the time limit been extended more than it used to be. 40 mins used to be the time cut on an average mid race Mountain stage, now it is that on a medium mountain stage on day 1 of Le Tour. Bit of a joke really.

Is it set in minutes or percent of winner's time?

Tried to watch the full stage but the only compelling bit was the final few kilometers. Has cycling always been this boring to consume on TV? :disappointed:
it is unless Pogacar is attacking this is the norm. Was frustrating to watch Jumbo go at the front and slow the peleton down just to work their ass of on the flat even with jorgenson later it was just terrible to watch, cost Wva the win too.

Gotta say I thought the climbs, temperature and unknown status of a bunch of riders made it watchable. Seeing Vingegaard do a bike change, chase back for a few minutes solo..Seeing the favorites just size each other up was a little boring, but I kept thinking stage fit Pitcock perfectly, was thinking, Ciccone or Bettiol might try a move for Italian pride..but watching the break work a little, it looked doomed,4,5 times. Thought it was a fun race to watch including Cavendish throwing up.. Exciting

Just got home. Only saw the last km live. Don’t want to read all the pages, gonna watch it tomorrow morning.

I guess no crashes today? Only Cav sick?

Glad the DSM duo hold on, like everyone I think. Maybe another leader tomorrow with the boni secondes.

It was a shame Ineos did not go to the front and pull hard after UAE knocked it off.
Watching the US feed on Peacock we got some Phil Liggett strategy wisdom at that point: " it looks like Bernal and....are ATTACKING!!!!" Just as they went to the edge of the feed zone to grab a bottle.
Bob Roll didn't say a word.....
That might have passed for some aggression.

Congratulations to Romain Bardet for winning the stage with style and an attitude.

From the moment he went you could see he is on a mission, failure was not an option today, on top of that Frank van den Broek played a perfect support role. Moho found himself in a breakaway but the heat got to him, Cavendish at one point looked like he was done and will DNF, big kudos to his team getting him through, Healy animating the race. UAE testing the field, still today the superstars section didn't want to empty themself, tomorrow that will be needed, or Pogi won't be in a position to gain any advantage. Visma raced for Wout today and was prepared to burn Tratnik and Jorgenson in the process. Rogla and Bora racing smart, didn't get involved and kept all three potential GC threats in best position.

I remember Phil saying that. I think Bob's silence was just to let the faux pas pass. No biggie.

Phil had a few missteps; Saying that the breakaway was cracking up when the camera shot went to Cav's group (with 2 DSM riders) struggling to turn over their pedals on a climb.

Once in awhile I got a bit of a Joe-Biden-debate vibe from Phil. It's OK though. Listening to Phil during a race puts me into a comfort zone. But I hope he retires from play by play calling before he ruins his rep.

One of the best play by play guys they briefly used was Robbie Mckuen. He was a wicked chopper sprinter but knows the races and action. He has a decent sense of humor, too. Van de Velde, Vangarderen....not so much.
