If barrages being made when riders are trying to get back is the new norm at a time when flat stages are being raced like this, then a crash or mechanical is going to be instant GG a lot of the time. Will only make things more nervous in the peloton, and it's hardly fair either.

Well, they can‘t just tow random dropped riders (and potential GC contenders) like Martinez up to the Peloton.

American cycling fans must really be an abomination in the eyes of God, or why does the biggest race get the worst commentating team and onscreen graphics of any race of the year?

He, Van Aert and Merlier all stated pre-race that they weren't targeting it.
Sort of think he should claim some smaller points (don't need to full sprint it out) as if Philipsen crashes, he'll be in a spot to actually go for it then
