Almeida, Remco and Lenny are all doing Tour later. What would be the downside if they move Romandie forward a week? I don't think it's about not getting Ardennes top dogs or Tour A listers, they don't get them much anyway, nor I think it's about competition with Trentino, or afraid to look like a Giro prep race.
It's a genuine question, I like its quirky little style, but I still don't see what's so great about its position in the calendar, how does it appeal to top riders and their forms etc..
And going back... Roglic, Thomas, Froome, Porte, Wiggins, Quintana, Pinot, Evans... are definitely some A-listers for the Tour that rode it in the spring as part of their schedule.
Edit: I think a very "traditional" or "conservative" build-up for the Tour with a rider more or less focused on only stage-racing would probably be to do ride 3-4 stage-races in the spring with Romandie being the last one.
Then Suisse/Dauphine before Tour.
