He did seem to appear from nowhere, but it was a lot more than a km out. He went past Acevedo just as Acevedo caught Dayer.

Maybe. He's been developing well over the last couple of years. Still only 24 and was 4th in this race last year. Quite a big talent although his most infamous moment so far in his career was being thrown off the Tour for finishing a stage in a team car (I think!).
